“A majestic ride”
Route crosses rivers and cuts through mountains to redwoods, making this one of America's most scenic rides. Trips depart from Fort Bragg and Willits. With a route criss-crossing over the Noyo River and cutting through the coastal mountains to towering Redwood forests, a ride aboard the Skunk Train is considered one of the ten most scenic train rides in North America! Trips are offered from two stations at opposite ends of our railroad in Fort Bragg, andWillits in the beautiful Mendocino region of Calfiornia. Regardless of your departure point, the view from our restored rail cars is pretty much unchanged from the late 1800s. Departing from Fort Bragg, the first few miles are along the Pudding Creek estuary, where common wildlife sightings include blue heron, egrets, osprey, ducks, and the occasional lounging turtle. After passing through Tunnel No. 1, the Skunk Train snakes its way along the Noyo River, zigzagging through the redwood-thick Noyo River Canyon. Departing from Willits and traveling to Northspur, your train will climb the Eastern slope of the Califfornia Coast Range, cutting through it at Tunnel No. 2 (Summit) before descending into the Noyo River Canyon. This is the mountainous part of our railroad line, in which 8.5 miles of track cover a straight-line distance of less than one mile.
Simple slow train ride through the trees, I think we did the pudding creek. The scenery is ok, but if you are planning on heading up to the Redwoods don't bother doing this for the views from the train. We also never saw any of the wildlife that was described. The highlight was model train area after the ride. Very elaborate and cool to see.
Not super impressed...very little scenery, wildlife or redwoods. The train ride is about an hour...you drive down the line for half the time, stop, and return the same way. It wasn't worth the money in my opinion...for Redwood Train Rides the Roaring Camp Train we did a few years ago was 100x better.
