“the most remote & primitive campground near olympic national park”
At 2400 feet Yahoo Lake Campground is one of the best kept secrets on the Olympic Peninsula, probably because it is so remote! It is a hike in campground that has two incredibly gorgeous sites that are only a short and easy hike from the trail head. It is just getting to the trailhead. There is an interesting vault toilet up a set of stairs that has a great little verandah and great handle on the door. Fun. Bring your own water and leave no trace. A trail with stunning views and some cleverly improvised stepping aids takes you completely around this little jewel of a lake. Logging happened here long ago and the visual history remains in the forest and lake but it is still truly a delight. From Queets, drive along US 101 for about 5 miles to the Hoh-Clearwater Mainline Road. Turn left, crossing the Queets River, and go 13 miles to C-3000 Road. Turn right at the sign for Upper Clearwater and Yahoo Lake Campgrounds. Continue on past the Upper Clearwater campground and over a one lane bridge. The narrow road climbs steeply over ridges with stellar forest views. The last two miles are gravel road. Yahoo lake is maintained by the Washington Department of Natural Resources. Reservations are not accepted. Camping is free. 4 sites are available. Open year-round.
