“primitive campground”
This campground is primitive and secluded, maintained by Department of Natural Resources. It is actually in the Olympic Experimental State Forest, also known as the Bert Cole State Forest. There are ten great sites that swing in an arc around one loop on the lovely Clearwater River, a tributary of the Queets. Entering the camp you pass a log shelter on your left, as you continue you find yourself entering an area of cottonwoods and in fact there is an enticing wetlands here that used to have a maintained boardwalk trail. Site two borders this area. Continuing on you find yourself more and more in a Classic temperate rainforest setting. Most of the secluded sites have wonderful little trails leading to the shallow, pebbly bottomed river. The river banks are edged with cottonwoods and the sounds of the gently flowing river with the murmur of the cottonwood trees is delightful. From Queets, drive along US 101 for about 5 miles to the Hoh-Clearwater Mainline Road. Turn left, crossing the Queets River, and follow 13 paved miles to C-3000 Road. A one lane bridge over Crocks Creek puts you on a one lane gravel road. Follow for 2 miles. Turn right on C1010 Road. The Campground is one mile down on the left. There are vault toilets, a group shelter and a hand boat launch. Bring your own drinking water.

I have three main requirements for a camping site: sun for solar, cell coverage, and manageable insects. This site failed on all three. I don't need a ton of sunlight, just an clear opening for a couple of hours, but like so many places on the Olympic peninsula it was not available here. No T-Mobile service, even boosted, and Verizon hit one bar off and on, but mostly off. Finally, the flies were as aggressive as I've ever encountered. Yes, being in a rain forest by a stream it should be expected, but I don't have to like it. If they land on you and you don't immediately shoo them off you'll get bitten. Now, if you're not averse to bug spray and don't need solar or cell reception, it's a perfectly lovely spot. But that ain't me.
The gravel road to the campsite is fine as far as gravel roads go, but the 15ish miles on Hoh Mainline Road is another story. I'm not normally one to complain about speed limits that are too high, but this road is so laden with unexpected hazards that the speed limit should be at least 10 mph lower. Dips and peaks, crevasses, potholes, tight turns with no >>> indicators, and one area where the pavement suddenly disappears only to be replaced with a mound of dirt and gravel. This road is the perfect course to let you know what in your RV is not properly secured. Take it slow, and if you see something ahead that looks bad, it is.

This is dry camping, but with a picnic table and fire ring. Right on the river and really pretty. Rainforest moss on the trees and lots of shade. There's a composting outhouse but lots of debris from earlier inconsiderate campers...no ranger upkeep.. The road in is rough...steep and narrow in places. Anything more than a small trailer would be iffy and certainly no big rigs should try it. I didn't go to 4wd but if it was wet or snowy I would. Next time will try some fly fishing. No cell coverage. Great remote spot.
