“a look back over 36 million years”

Take an unforgettable journey back in time...36 million years to an ancient log jam deposited by a river from halfway across our young continent. Nature Trail Walk along the Nature Trail and pause to read the Trail Guide at each point of interest. Moving at a leisurely pace, you begin to see the story of the Mississippi Petrified Forest unfold. Seeing all of the natural beauty surrounding the Trail, and hearing the sounds of nature, you will always be near to the huge logs that lie right next to the trail, some close enough to touch -- to feel the rugged roughness of stone beneath your fingers where there was once bark and wood - a living tree. The most photographed log is the "Caveman's Bench," which lies right on the Forest Trail just where the eroding sands had placed it. Everyone tries it out for size, and it is a favorite spot for taking pictures. In the old piece of canyon wall beside the Bench are a number of log sections still embedded, which were once all part of the same huge tree. The huge stone logs give us a glimpse into prehistoric time. What a primeval forest there must have been when these stone logs were living trees. What tremendous trees they must have been, some with trunks that may have measured twelve to fifteen feet across, their towering branches cresting a hundred or more feet into the sky. How few living trees there are today that can match the magnificence of these stone logs, giants of their own time and gigantic to us today. Museum The Earth Science Museum contains a large map with examples of petrified wood found in every state, and foreign petrified wood is represented as well. Plant life through the ages is shown by a variety of leaves, fruits, cones and bark. There are also fossil woods identified as to species. Many other kinds of fossils are on display - dinosaur footprints, whale bones, turtle shells, and many others -- even a complete cast of a prehistoric camel. Gem Mining Flume Gem fluming is a fun and rewarding experience you can enjoy on our rock patio. Playing in the water, finding a gem - that's what "fluming" is. Start with a bag of "mine muck", the real term for rocks out of the mines. Wash and screen it, watch for real gems - you keep what you find! This is a great way to start a rock collection while learning the identifications of numerous gems and minerals. Flume bags can be purchased in the gift shop for $4.00+tax. Campground The campground features 11 full hook-up RV camp sites with water, sewer and electric (20, 30 and 50 AMP service) and a tent camping area that includes 4 sites with water and electricity. This is a secluded wooded area offering peace and quiet in a wonderful natural setting. Showers and restrooms are located in the campground area as well as a dump station. Future plans include an expansion with additional sites to accommodate larger RVs. Pavilion Our newest addition is a large covered pavilion with lights, water and electricity. This approximately 30’ X 60’ structure is available for rent for activities such as family gatherings, company picnics, birthday parties, weddings or any special event and can accommodate groups up to 200 or more people. Our park area is amazingly beautiful and provides a perfect environment for special gatherings. Groups of 15 or more are eligible for a special group rate to see the Petrified Forest. Contact us for details. Gift Shop Be sure to visit our gift shop where you can purchase a petrified wood souvenir to remember your journey through time. This is a beautiful little park. It only took about two hours to go through but it was well worth it. Their museum is small but fascinating if you love fossils and gems. I would definitely recommend visiting if you are in the area.

Small place that is worth visiting if you are in the area. The short (30 minute) walk is cool to look at, but the real gem is the museum building at the end of the tour. Lots of petrified wood examples, gems, fossils, metals, minerals. This isnt state or federal funded but it really should be since it is so well done. Bring bug spray if you plan to visit since you are outdoors and in the woods.

Great vegetation. The views of the forest are amazing. The ambiance of the forest is very relaxing. It's a nice place to have a walk and enjoy nature. The trail is easy to walk because of the pathway with petrified trees. They also give a guide book for visitors which is very informative. The staff was friendly and enthusiastic.

I had one day to camp, I picked this one because FL sites were closed due to hurricane. It was just me and my 6yo son. You drive through a neighborhood of a sorts- a road with houses on it.

The trail was a mile'ish walk... we took our time. If you camp, they only charge you $5 each oppose to $7 adult, $6 child. You have to go through the visitor building to start the trail. You end back at the building to go through the 'museum'. It's small, gems & fossils.

There are about 4 tent spots, seems mostly an rv area.
It's a small area, not much hiking trails which made me sad but not a big deal since i was only spending one night there. I guess we could have explored the woods, which we kind of did to get firewood.
Campsites have a fire circle with attached grill grate.
There is a bathroom, and shower- pretty simple but clean. It's not far from tent spots.

...with the petrified forest (not an actual forest, but a lot of petrified wood that was carried there via an extinct river looooonng ago). That was super cool!!

For our site (pull-through), the water and electric (30 and 50 amp) were across from each other (not on the same side). Not a big deal for us but might be for some. The site was sandy and not level, but we had no problem getting our rig level. The one shower was clean (with a few spider webs in the corners), and it had The Best Water Pressure I’ve ever experienced!!! Excellent surprise! Staff was friendly.

It was a very small park with limited RV spaces. I enjoyed how quiet it was and how much room around the tent sites that my dogs had to run around.

The only downside I would say is I went shortly after a winter snow storm just passed and the ground was very wet and muddy. My RV and truck got stuck in he spot I was in resulting in one of the legs of my RV needing repair.

Besides that, the staff was very friendly and the little gift shop they have at the front was full of interesting souvenirs. It was very easy to find and the restrooms though pretty old and rustic were clean.

Finding the place and checking in went fine.

The sites are not quite level. For most, they are level enough, but, with a truck camper, we decided to lower the legs and lift off the bed to level. Not really a problem, but just something we had not planned on doing. We then considered completely unhooking and going into town, but, the site concerned me in that I was not confident that it was level and unbumpy enough to get the truck back under the camper safely. Again, with a different camper, I doubt there would be an issue, but for us it was.

The primitive sites had several tent campers, looked like a good set up. Facility had pavilions. The gift shop was worth spending some time in. The trail through the forest was very nice. Apparently it's a popular destination. We could see the shop/trail entrance from our site and there was a steady stream of traffic.

The coupling on our sewer was a bit crumpled, so our fitting would not thread to it. But, it worked without issue.
