“come visit the resident ghost”
In 1985, Flagstaff, Arizona searched for a perfect location to build a new library. The Flagstaff voters approved a $4 million bond issue to erect a modern facility at the site of the old Emerson School. Architects from Snowden and Hopkins designed the spacious 34,000 square foot building. In May 1987, a grand opening was held at the Flagstaff Public Library which features cathedral ceilings and four fireplaces. The current public library system serves a combined population of approximately 116,000 adults and youth. The library is also known to have a resident ghost. Emerson School was completed in 1895 and was considered to be the finest school in Flagstaff. Matt Riordan spoke at the school dedication ceremony when the cornerstone was placed and sealed. The sturdy two-story schoolhouse was constructed with a deep cellar beneath it. Emerson School served Flagstaff students from 1896 until it was condemned in 1980. The landmark school was out forever, and eventually torn down. Now the modern Flagstaff Public Library stands in its place. Many librarians and patrons claim they have seen his shadowy figure ascending a long forgotten staircase to the upper floors of the school building that is no longer there. He seems to disappear just as he reaches the top step. Doors in the library open and close on their own, and strange noises are frequently reported throughout the facility. The librarians have often blamed the night janitors of moving books, papers, and other items after hours when the building is closed. Of course the cleaning staff denies the accusations of tomfoolery. Is the ghost of Emerson School the result of a residual haunting and now walking the halls without a pass in the Flagstaff Public Library? Check it out for yourself. This library is overdue for a good investigation.
