“2500 species of plant on 200 acres”
The Arboretum at Flagstaff is a 200-acre (81 ha) arboretum that is home to 2,500 species of mostly drought-tolerant adapted and native plants representative of the high-desert Colorado Plateau, home to the Grand Canyon and Zion National Park. It is located 3.8 miles (6.1 km) south of U.S. Route 66 on Woody Mountain Road, on the west side of Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. The facility is located at 7,150' in elevation, making it one of the highest-elevation public gardens in the United States. The Arboretum is known for its extensive collection of the genus Penstemon. The Arboretum at Flagstaff was founded in 1981 as a private nonprofit organization under the official name “The Transition Zone Horticultural Institute.” While research was the original primary focus, over the years it has become known as a destination for local and out-of-town visitors who want to learn more about the native plants and animals found in northern Arizona.
Only open between May 1 through October 31. They have a 50-minute guided tour that starts at 11am and 1pm. The place is full of picnic tables and you can bring your own lunch!
Before entering the wonderful garden you will have to pass through a marvelous row of Pendrosa Pines forest that has a delightful and engaging scent. Also, you will encounter a lot of magnificent wild flowers and grass.
The visitor center is quite a large place and has magnificent views of San Francisco's peaks. Also, the trip is educational and highly recommended for nature lovers and plant lovers who would want to relax and have some peaceful time. Visiting this place in the afternoon is also recommended.
Also if you would scan their website, you will know that the place also offers to hold different events like weddings, parties and etc.
But just for a precaution, the drive is a little bumpy. Especially if you would turn to Wood Mountains, only the first mile there is paved and the next 3 miles are not and the drive is very rough. And you will experience a lot of trouble because of the dust and dirt that might stick to your car and block the visibility of the road.
Thought this would be neat to check out?
