“last remaining large habitat of the Northern Everglades”

Loxahatchee is the last remaining large habitat of the Northern Everglades. The 150,000 acres are managed by the USFWS. The 57 mile long canal that circles most of the Refuge is a prime fresh water fishing area for Florida anglers. There are boat ramps at the entrances from Loxahatchee Road (southern end); Southern Boulevard (northern end); as well as at the main entrance at the end of Lee Road; where there is also a 100 foot long fishing pier extending over the canal. The separate 5.5 mile long canoe/kayak trail into the sawgrass prairie is also accessible from the main entrance road. Bring your own or rent from the local concessionnaire. There are also marked and signed hiking trails through the Marsh and Cypress Swamp areas. Hikers and bikers also enjoy the levee that runs adjacent to the main canal. Within minutes you will be in pristine wilderness. The Visitor Center is open from 9-4 daily; although the grounds are open sunrise to sunset. The Visitor Center has an auditorium where a stunning 20 minute film introducing you to Loxahatchee is show; a Virtual Airport tour that transports you to the interior of the Refuge; a Night Sounds of the Everglades room that stuns you with its surround sound experience; a Tree Island installation with Alligator Hole that children can crawl thru; and many other hands on interactive exhibits. Admission is $5 per car unless an annual or lifetime pass is shown. Passes and Duck stamps can be purchased at the fee booth or inside the VC. The front desk has binoculars for loan and the Gift Shop sells a wide selection of guide books for adults and children as well as a myriad of Everglades related wearables; collectibles; and novelty items. The schedule of guided bird walks; Marsh trail tours; canoe expeditions; and Cypress Swamp tours vary with the season so do call or check the website ahead of time. Read Less

Just a heads up if you want to ride the gravel trail on the berm. The trail has a locked gate and fence blocking travel further North about 11 miles from the trail entrance. Nice 22 mile RT but had I known I would of gone South at the start.
