“Where great runners are born”
Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, is one of the best-known historic track and field stadiums in the United States. Nearly a century in age, it was the home of the University of Oregon's football team from 1919 through 1966, and has been the home to the Ducks' track and field teams since 1921. Hayward Field was named after track coach Bill Hayward, who ran the Ducks' program from 1904 to 1947. Renovated in 2004, it is one of only four International Association of Athletic Federations Class 1 certified tracks in the United States (along with Hutsell-Rosen Track, Icahn Stadium, John McDonnell Field) Where legends come to live. The great Steve Prefontaine ran here under coach Bill Bauerman in the 1970s. Since then, it has hosted the US Track and Field's Championships, US Track and Field Olympic Trials, and has the Prefontaine Classic every year. Originally constructed in 1919 as the University of Oregon's football field, it switched over to track and field fully as of 1967. It is a mecca for track and field and cross country athletes of all shapes and sizes.
This field has so much history. It was amazing to step foot in it. Tracktown is a must see place if you are into running and track and field.
