We're in the midst of a very fast trip from Forest City, Iowa to the Phoenix area but had pushed hard enough to take the slow road through northen New Mexico. The Maverick campground was picked because it was nicely placed on the map, but I'd absolutely come back again.
There are three campgrounds in the Cimarron Canyon State Park. The camp host says that Maverick is the most scenic of the three. It does border the highway, but there's VERY little traffic at night, so nightime highway noise is not a issue.
The park says the campsites are 20 to 30 feet in length. We spotted a couple larger rigs as we drove through before selecting our site, but it appeared that a shoehorn may have been used to get them in place. There are a number of sites that back to the "Gravel Pit Lakes" that were all full, including a couple rigs sticking out into the narrow loop road leaving just enough clearance to get by. The sites that back to the highway are the last to fill but were the only ones available with enough length when we arrived.
There is one restroom building and trash collection. I didn't check out the interior of the bathroom building. All of the sites are without power or electric so the cost is $10 which is the standard for New Mexico State Parks.
I'm not sure how many bars I had since the Mobley device I carried on this trip doesn't show bars, but we had enough AT&T connectivity to post this review.

Camp host greeted us as we came in and placed us in a site. Maverick campground is an easy walk to fishing and just great scenery. Look forward to visiting again!

Cimarron Canyon. NM State park is inexpensive but poorly maintained. The sites are overused and the paving is falling apart. The bathrooms are barely clean. The sites are very crowded with lots of big RV’s squeezed in. Camphost was very nice and accommodating. The area is pretty to drive or bicycle through. The trails are poorly maintained. Despite all of that, it is a good location for access to Eagle Nest and the park which is pretty

Most spots are tree covered with good spacing. Nice creek and several ponds. The walking trails alongside the creek are flat and easy to stroll. We have a 30 ft.rig. I don’t think any larger would work well. No hook ups and no amenities nearby. The town of Cimarron has a small, but well stocked grocery at the gas station. A decent laundromat there also. It’s about a 20 minute drive. Eagle’s Nest, on the other end of the canyon has several restaurants and gas but no groceries. We enjoyed our stay of 4 nights. Peaceful.

Stayed two nights late September. The hosts met us as we came in and showed us a spot right by the little lake! They were very helpful and we will definitely be back! Fishing was great!

Arrived at Maverick Campground, and pulled into site 65, very clean and lots of shade. Arrival time is 4 pm, the camp hosts, Ken and Sandy were very friendly. They work very hard to keep the camp sites clean, no trash and fire pits were cleaned out. The camp rules are enforced, a nice family friendly campground and two fishing ponds and hiking trails, The bathrooms were cleaned daily, no showers or dump station, but has potable water by the bathrooms, will stay at this campground again.
