“A piece of Colorado history”
A stroll down Durango’s Main Avenue is a sensory treat: the Colorado air is crisp and subtly scented by restaurant and café delicacies; on most days the sun streams through the streets, intensifying the colorful store-front awnings and highlighting the neighboring mountain ridge. Streets are a bustle with seasonal snow and commerce and visitors mingling in everyday transactions. Smiles and friendly greetings are commonplace along the downtown’s Main Avenue, where it is safe to walk and explore at all hours, day and night. Today Downtown Durango is a Nationally Registered Historic District, with something special in store for each visitor. The downtown area has been coined “The living room of the Durango community” by voices of the Durango Business Improvement District, who have a 20-year revitalization plan in store for historic downtown that began in 1997. Downtown Durango is a central part of the city’s allure, business, and history, and Durango leaders intend to continually nurture the beautiful historic district.
Downtown is really nice. Wish we had more time in Durango. Was able to get some reasonably priced tshirts at Half Priced Tees.
Downtown Durango is totally cool. The main street is filled with everything from saloons to coffeeshops to upscale eateries, so there's something for everybody. Be sure and check out the coal-running train as it pulls out on its way to Silverton!
This was one of the stops for our Amazing Race trip with our family. We loved the rocky mountain chocolates. We enjoyed our short trolley ride. We window shopped and enjoyed seeing all of the local support!
Okay, I guess. We went during XMas. Not as s lit up or christmassy as you hope. We did not see any horse drawn sleigh rides and we were there twice both night and day. Stores close early. We were walking around at 7pm and if they were not already closed they were closing. The southern part near the train is best. The chocolate store is good. Chocolate and candy store like any other you have been in. The toy store is a joke. Not a kid you store. More for nerdy adults. The General Palmer and Started hotel are pretty. Just not the local jewell I hoped for.
