Sowell Creek is a decent COE campground with great views of Lake Proctor and lots of pecan trees. Sites are level and spaced out reasonably. Each has its own covered picnic table and the full hookups are a huge bonus because the bathrooms and showers are a little drafty and cold in the winter with no heat. Small gas station and grocery store nearby. They allow delivery of packages (ask for address at gate, mailing address on rec.gov app isn’t campground) or there is an Amazon Hub Locker 25 minutes away in Stephenville. Also many stores and restaurants in Stephenville including a Walmart and H-E-B.

Sowell Creek is a Corp of Engineer Park located on Proctor Lake approximately and hour and forty-five minutes Southwest of Fort Worth, Texas. The park has 61 RV sites on five loops with a combination of 30 amp, 50 amp, and sewer. The Good: Check-in was super easy and the staff was very friendly. Sites are large and have a covered picnic table and fire ring. This park is for boaters! You can anchor your boat or jet ski right behind your trailer at most of the sites located on the lake. Surprisingly, very good cell service for being located in the middle of nowhere. The Bad: Sites are somewhat close together and the grass burs and fire ants were terrible. Restrooms were not the cleanest. Overall the park was ok and we would probably stay here again if passing through, especially for $13 a night using the "Old Geezer Pass".

This camp ground was atrocious and we left several days early. Site #2 had a profound odor of sewage coming from the restroom. The restrooms were dirty and several faucets were broken and leaking. Flies were swarming everywhere from trashcans and trach bins that did not have properly fitting lids. People outside the park have dogs that bark ALL NIGHT LONG, and that is no exaggeration. If you are in a tent you will get NO SLEEP. We had a next-door-neighbor in site #3 who showed up and immediately began to start a fire even though there was a burn ban in effect. We called the front desk to inquire if perhaps the burn ban had been lifted and were told no, and that the camp staff would come to take care of this. The camp staff did come by, only to actually laugh and joke with the people in site 3, who stopped their fire, but then continued to have the open pit fire after she left. These same people also allowed their dog to run loose with no leash. The next day these people left their dog in their camper while all of them drove off and exited the park around 11:30 a.m. They left the windows of the camper down and the dog barked for 2.5 hours. We called the camp staff again after the first 30 minutes of solid barking, and the woman who answered actually stated, "I don't know what I can do about that, as we have never had anyone complain about a loud dog before." During this time we heard repeated gun shots close by the park perimeter, and then we heard one round actually whiz over our head. So that was enough for us, and we left at 2:30 p.m., two nights early. NEVER AGAIN. We will NEVER stay at at COE campsite again. They are filthy, dirty, UNSAFE and the staff absolutely do not care about your enjoyment or safety, nor do they follow county ordinances. We will be informing the Corps of Engineers office about this visit, so perhaps the staff can be properly reprimanded. This review will be posted EVERYWHERE that Sowell Creek Park has an internet presence.

Very nice park. The first 7 sites are best having full hookups and 30/50 amp power. There are other sites only 1 -7 have 50amp full hookups.
We had a level site and decent gaps between sites.
Staff was friendly and helpful.

If you are looking for solitude in the middle of nowhere, you will appreciate this COE campground. Most loops were closed but our site #21 was perfect. It was under huge trees and there were only 2 other campers in the whole loop. They left 2 days before we plan to. We are the only campers in the loop now and it is great. Bathrooms/showers are a little dated but clean. Tons of deer come out at dusk nightly. Fishing docks were mostly closed and the lake level was down. We would come here again.

I like Corp of Engineers campgrounds as I pretty much know what to expect. They are clean, well maintained and Sowell Creek was no exception. Check was easy and a friendly host. We had a nice site over looking the lake.
Fishing is the thing here but the lake level is too low for the boat launch and it appears it has been low for quite some time, years. But we stopped here for a night as we were heading from Houston to Colorado and didn't want to go through Dallas/Fort Worth. It turned out to be a good route.
