We pulled off down the road. A dirt road and pulled off the road and stopped and stayed there. 1 night only 1 car drove by. Free. Quiet.

NM state parks opened camping to non residents on Feb 28. We snagged a few nights here at Rockhound. Camping is by reservation only, group area and dry camping remain closed. Visitors center is closed. Electric sites are $14 plus $4/day fee for online reservation.
Nice clean park with two short hiking trails accessible from camp area. Several geocaches here as well! We didn't use the bathroom (host said the showers were closed) so can't comment on that. Clean dump station, nice to have it all be downhill and not up and over a curb.
Met by host on gator cart who drove us up to our site. Site 16 is up at the top of the hill (the whole campground is on the side of the hill). Our 36' class a leveled ok but we did put out the booster step at our entry. I was very impressed at how level the sites were in spite of the natural terrain.
All sites have a picnic table, cover, and fire pit/grill along with 30 amp electric and water. Cell service was good, I'd recommend grocery shopping at Peppers, local Walmart was clean for supplies. Took a day trip up to Hatch for lunch (Sparkys) and shopping. DH Lescombes is a local winery in town, open for tastings now along with purchases.
Great views of the sunset, quiet although windy, especially this time of year. Definitely recommend!

Stayed one night while passing through.
Was able to book the only pull-through they had, so we didn’t need to unhook.
Sites don’t appear to be anywhere near level.
Water and electric hookup, dump station on site, picnic table with shelter, and fire pit.
The road in was rutted and had dips every 30 yards or so.
Only con was there was so many freaking flies everywhere.

This park deserves high rankings across the board. Not a bad site in the park. Very generous, level pads with water & electric. Camp hosts are friendly, accommodating. Each site has its own trash can. Gorgeous views. Nice hiking trail. Very clean restrooms with showers. 5 stars for me!

We arrived without a reservation and the wonderful camp host "Karen" was very accommodating. She was truly happy to see us and ensured we had a spot to camp. Due to the size of our fifth wheel (37-foot) we were unable to fit into any of the overflow sites available at the time. We ended up dry camping in a "site" off the side of the main entrance. Karen assured me if an electric site opened she would keep an eye out for me, and sure enough the next morning she was at our site with additional options available. However, we enjoyed being further away from the other campers and decided to remain on our current site.
This park was well maintained and all of the staff were very friendly and helpful.

I am catching up with reviews, so we actually were here in late February 2018. Most of the sites here are first-come-first-served except for a handful of partial hook-up sites. After hearing how popular this park is, we arrived before 11:00 AM Sunday morning. Karen, the host, came racing over to meet us in her golf cart, catching us before we turned into the hook-up section. All the hook-up sites were taken, so she showed us the 3 available dry camping spots & we gladly chose one. They were all nice, big sites with awesome views. Karen showed us where to get fuel, groceries, propane, wineries (with tasting coupons, no less!) & recommended one of the most memorable restaurants I've ever patronized, the Adobe Deli! You have to be a bit open-minded when going there, as it's got a lot of character. I'll leave it at that.... Back to Rock Hound, they have one 2? mile hike up the hill above the CG with nice views of the area & the highest concentration of prickly pear cactus I've ever seen. They also have a little cactus garden accessible to the hook-up loop. There is one nice, newish bathroom with showers located also in the hook-up loop, near the dump station. There is a pit toilet in the picnic/overflow area. This CG becomes a circus every afternoon when new campers roll in. Since it fills up every day by noon or sooner, Karen (the hardest working host I've ever seen) greets each one and first places them in the overflow area, then sides of the road & maybe even the parking lot at the visitor's center after hours. I don't know if they actually turn people away, or the late campers have a better plan B option.

Only stayed one night but such a pretty park. Camp host Connie met us at the entrance and escorted us to our site. Gave us all the park and local info. Most sites are huge and well maintained. We were level so didn’t need to unhitch. Very clean bathrooms. A couple short trails out of campground for a morning hike. Very peaceful, Definitely recommend if you need a stopover while traveling on I-10.

Upon approaching the entrance, there is a Stop sign and orange cones which block the right hand side lane. Instructions are provided to pay to enter, camp, etc. Since we had reservations, we bypassed the cones and drove a couple of hundred yards to the Visitors Center. Finding the Visitors Center closed, we drove to our reserved site #21.
As we were disconnecting the Jeep, Connie, the camp host arrived and introduced himself. After he made sure we were OK, he pointed out his camper in case we needed anything, let us know he was 1 of 2 camp host and departed.
We only had one full day to enjoy the area. We made the best of it by visiting Trina's Rock Shop in Deming, rockhounding in the park and finding 2 geocaches on the 1.1 mile hiking trail.
An additional day would have provided us more time to visit/hike Spring Canyon State Park. It is located a couple of miles past the turn of for Rock Hound SP.
Although this SP is a good ways off of I-10, it is worth the trip. It is in a quiet, scenic location at the foot of the Florida Mountains.
