Confirmed by 3 users | Last reported on March 23, 2023Perhaps it was the 80 degree weather, perhaps the fact that it's a mere 1/2 mile off the highway, or even perhaps that our children didn't fight the entire 15 hours we were there - regardless, if you're driving from say, the dust ridden towns of west Texas and need a quick, rewarding place to pull over for the night, the bluffs above Amistad Reservoir will be a welcome respite. Sure you can hear the roar of the big rigs still, but the views make up for it. Ain't nothing for amenities, save a pit toilet - but even that was appreciated if you know what I'm saying.

Governors Landing feels like a rest stop, but it's a campground. It's located right off the highway, which means there's a lot of road noise.
We chose site #5 because it's farthest from the road, and it seemed the most private (though we quickly learned otherwise). There's a trail to the lake leading to a dock behind our campsite, so we regularly saw people walking by with fishing poles.
Many sites are small and un-level, but there are a few that can accommodate bigger rigs. There is water available and 2 vault toilets.
Verizon had 1 bar of 2G - which means voice only, no data. I was a little worried about that since I use Verizon for work calls, but didn't have a problem.

most sites look sloped and site 1 through 10 are laid out for smaller rigs. we paralleled at site 7 and were able to get level without any aids ( class B camper van). good view of the reservoir and very private.
water available throughout the campground close to any site. the campground was fairly full but we arrived fairly early and had our pick except for site 5
site 5 is the premier location for privacy and a panoramic view
the campground is close to the Highway, but the traffic is light and noise level is not worth mentioning.
we paid $5.00 which includes senior discount

I would have given this place 5-starts except for the continual car and train noise. I had to wear earplugs at bedtime. Several of the campsites have pathways to nice swimming areas. The water is very clear and cold compared to other Texas lakes. Can be windy at times. If you have a Senior Pass the cost at all Amistad sites is 1/2 price.
There is water at this location and a convenience store nearby for gas, ice & groceries. Close to Del Rio as well.

If you stop at the ranger station just outside of Del RÃo, you can snag a Jr. Ranger book. Once acquired, they will also provide you with the badge AND patch. No need to make a distinction here, folks. The ranger then grants you full rights to administer said patches once your children have successfully completed the book. Not only does this save you a trip back to what can be a well out of the way ranger station, depending on your plans, it grants the adult in your life (I assume) the full and immediate privileges of a NPS Ranger. I haven’t asked about my pension just yet, but I assume they’ll notify me come 97 or whatever the current retirement age is when I’m old.

Yes, there is the road and random train noise from the nearby bridges. We however, didn't notice it enough to have it bother us, we slept great. Can't remember the site number we stayed in but it was the "pull through" on the water side. A little small for our 26 foot fifth wheel but we managed and once settled in it was an amazing stay. Was able to get lots of solar and cel signal was fine on At&T. The dog loved swimming in the lake and walks among the limestone shores were fun.
Water spigots were also handy to have and for 8 bucks a night it was perfect.

A great place for travelers to rest up at a reasonable rate. Nice staged table areas, pit toilets, easy site access and low prices.

What a beautiful site for sunset and moonrise. About 10 campers here, mostly truck campers...would be tough turning for anything very long. Short bike rides and walks around. Vault toilets in the campground were a little shaky; those in the day use area better. Lots of road noise in our site, but nothing ear plugs couldn't overcome.

The perfect blend of camping & access for me. I dont like RV parks so was thrilled to find this well kept primitive RV camping in a recreation area near a thoroughfare. Yup, you can hear travelers/truckers going by, yup there is a train that you hear from time to time and there is a public shooting range across the highway but i found it all delightful looking at the beautiful lake sitting on white carbonate gravel. $5/nite with the interagency pass. Good connectivity, bugs not terrible and my own little path to an inlet. Will definitely come back!
