Confirmed by 5 users | Last reported on May 28, 2023Top of the mountain is approx 2.5 miles above highway 85. Take the Mt. Rosevelt Road which starts paved then turns into dirt/gravel. Pretty well maintained but a little washboard at times. After you pass the trail head continue up the road. You will see a few spots on the left in the trees but they are small. When you approach the turn out on the right the road up to the top is on the left. We have a 30' fifth wheel and had no problem getting up the hill. The views are amazing with the town of Deadwood below. The weather in July was awesome, we got it all. Rain, hail, thunder, lightning, fog and beautiful blue skies. We were there for five nights and had not problems. The cell service is excellent with AT&T, Verizon and TMobile. Enjoy the journey. #maketodaythatsomeday #themorgansonthemove

This site has the most beautiful view! Although it really only has room for 1 maybe 2 rigs. Basically it is a small loop (which is very unlevel) with one back in site. It would be hard to get anything over 30ft in here, unless you’re a pro at backing up. There are turn off’s along the road that people were camped in and they were even camped at the trail head which could hold 2-3 larger rigs.

So about a 1/4 mile down from the trailhead on the left hand side there is a large pull-thru site that is relatively level and could accompany a big rig.

We were able to get our 42' 5th wheel in this spot, but it was tight! There are about 4 spots here, two of which fit our rig. There was great cell phone service and an awesome view. It took about 15 minutes to get to downtown Deadwood. There were UTVs driving up and down the road during the day. I recommend coming from highway 85 as coming directly from Deadwood down Denver Ave. is very tight for any vehicle. This spot is pretty popular!

There aren’t a ton of cleared sites at the loop so get here early. There was room for our tent and small suv in the middle of the loop between two trees. Two thunderstorms moved through while we were there, the first didn’t hit directly but brought lots of wind. You really are on top of the mountain here. Stunning views of lightning strikes in the valley below. If you’re tenting, the center site is level but bumpy/rocky. Hard to get some stakes pounded in. Road up the mountain is washboard but maintained.

Arrived to the very spacious campsite and found it occupied by one other travel trailer. Good news is that there is room for both of us so I moved right in. There was even room for a tent camper if one showed up. Fantastic view as this site really is on top of a mountain. Also 4 bars of Verizon access which I was very happy about since this was my first campsite in 6 days where I had phone service. I saw several turkeys in the 3 days I was there. No fishing in the area so that was a little disappointing but the campsite easily made up for that. For me this was a great place to kick back and just relax after spending 12 days in Wyoming catching big fish in Fremont and Yellowstone lakes.

Once you make it up the gravel road, drive past the Mt. Roosevelt hiking trial (pit toilets available at this location) to get to the good pull off sites. There are a few options available for all types of rigs (big and small). We choose the first pull off on the left past the hiking trail. It was a large u-shaped drive with plenty of room for a big rig with another smaller pull off along the side that can easily fit a large class C or smaller. The views are beautifully breathtaking and it is very quite. It’s a 10 minute drive to Deadwood, 20 minutes to Lead, and 23 mins to Spearfish. There is so much to do and see in the area and this is a great home base. We have fallen in love with this area and can’t wait to return.

This is one of my favorite camping sites. It’s very quiet and you have a beautiful view of the town of Deadwood and the mountains.

It’s free! The view was beautiful!!! There are fire rings at some. A decent amount of traffic. But very peaceful. There’s no amenities. Lots of dead wood all over. Decent size site. Deadwood is a fun cute little town with different things to do.
