“lovely scenic kayak trail”
Located in the western Panhandle; the upper Yellow River is unique in that it drains the state's highest elevation. As a result; the current is faster and there are numerous high banks. Hardwood forests and high sandy banks frame the waterway. Farther downstream; the river deepens and slows as it passes through cypress and gum swamps. Water levels can fluctuate dramatically in a short period of time. Due to its scenic nature; the Yellow River is a state-designated Florida paddling trail.
I lived in Crestview as a teenager going to JR High and High school there. I have traveled a lot and paddled all across the southeast. I can assure you that I always go home for the absolute best paddling anywhere! We use to have canoe races on the Yellow River. The rivers here are absolutely gorgeous from Yellow River in Crestview to "Cotton Bridge" in Baker, FL to Blackwater River in Milton and Blackwater State park. There are beaches on every turn! Clear sandy bottom rivers. No rocks or mud or dirt! Its just an amazing time. These rivers flow! No need to kill yourself paddling on these rivers, its a relaxing, very easy paddle or even just a float in a tube! If you can I would suggest the Overnight Trips and Camp on a Sand Bar. I cannot say enough about it! It is a must see for anyone that likes the outdoors, water, camping.
