“a treasured pathway”
The Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (PCT) is a treasured pathway through some of the most outstanding scenic terrain in the United States. Beginning in southern California at the Mexican border, the PCT travels a total distance of 2,650 miles through California, Oregon, and Washington until reaching the Canadian border. The PCT is one of the original National Scenic Trails established by Congress in the 1968 National Trails System Act. It is administered by the US Forest Service. The Forest Service partners with the Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, California State Parks, and the Pacific Crest Trail Association to provide effective management and protection of the trail. Thousands of hikers and equestrians enjoy this national treasure each year. Some only travel a few miles, while others complete every mile in a single season!
This trail is but one section of the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail which traverses from Canada to Mexico. Many places along the trail offer commanding views of the surrounding peaks, lakes and valleys. Much of the trail is at or above timberline and therefore usually snow covered from early November into July.
Water is available near the trail at Thielsen Creek, Maidu Lake and Tolo Camp and a pit toilet is available at Windigo Pass. There is parking at Windigo Pass and North Crater Trailheads. The trail is great for a day hike of extended pack trip, though not marked for Nordic skiing. The southern end receives light use in the winter. The trail is closed to motorized and mountain bike use as it is within the Mt. Thielsen Wilderness or provides access to the wilderness.
