Historic Treasure

Our Take

Did you know that the Roebling Bridge, which connects downtown Cincinnati with Covington, Kentucky across the Ohio, is the OG Brooklyn Bridge? This Midwest version was built a few years before NYC's, and is just as pretty. It's particularly fun to drive across, since the grated bridge decking makes a humming noise as car tires pass over it; Some even refer to it as "The Singing Bridge."

“predecessor to the Brooklyn Bridge”

The Roebling Bridge between Covington, Kentucky and Cincinnati, Ohio opened to traffic on January 1, 1867.  Its central span of 1057 feet was the longest in the world.  John A. Roebling had spent most of the previous two years in New York and at his home in New Jersey vigorously planning for his next proposed project – a bridge over the East River connecting New York City and Brooklyn. The work at Covington had been under the supervision of his son, Washington, since early in 1865. The John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge spans the Ohio River between Cincinnati, Ohio and Covington, Kentucky. When the first pedestrians crossed on December 1, 1866, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at 1,057 feet (322 m) main span. Today, many pedestrians use the bridge to get between the arenas in Cincinnati (Paul Brown Stadium, Great American Ball Park, and U.S. Bank Arena) and the hotels, bars, restaurants, and parking lots in Northern Kentucky. The bar and restaurant district at the foot of the bridge on the Kentucky side is known as Roebling Point. Also made famous in the movie, "Rain Man" as they drive across the bridge to leave Cincinnati.

At the base of the bridge on the Ky side, is a quaint little coffee shop.

Definitely the coolest and my favorite bridge in Cincy. The perfect spot to take a stroll around the Ohio River and take in the underrated beauty of the Queen City.

Being from out west, we don't have these cool historic bridges. But when we went through in summer 2020 we made sure to drive over it and weren't disappointed. Really enjoyed seeing it, and researching it with our children to learn it's history.

Perfect for a sunny day. I suggest walking up and back both sides and checking out the spots at the end of each side.

The bridge is really pretty and creates a really nice picture of Cincinnati. Serves a purpose, too, getting people to-and-from Cincinnati and Kentucky.

Cincinnati's riverfront is nice, but my favorite thing about it are the beautiful bridges connecting the city to Kentucky. Definitely worth a walk across, and you can grab some excellent photos of the skyline from the Kentucky side of the river.

This is a beautiful bridge with so much history. Its fun to drive over, with the distinct buzz your tires make over the grates. There's a good chance you will lose any phone and radio reception you have as you cross; you are surrounded by a lot of metal.

An easy-on-the-eyes sight amongst the otherwise all-steel bridges dotting the river. Don't forget that this was designed and used to model the Brooklyn Bridge after.

Easily the most beautiful bridge in Cincinnati! I could take a million photos of this bridge and it still wouldn't do it justice because it's even more amazing in person.

This bridge is a gorgeous walk. Especially on a nice day. Either side of the river near it has great food + drink options too. Some cool history too!
