“Swing in for great drinks: brewery in Colorado Springs, CO”
The Phantom Canyon Brewing Company opened in December 1993, after almost three years in the planning. Phantom Canyon is located in the historic Cheyenne Building, which was built in 1901. Originally the local offices of the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad, the building was renovated in 1909 and re-opened as The Cheyenne Hotel (owned and operated by the Shafer family until 1963). Our award-winning beers are made from the finest malted barley and hops from the around the globe, carefully selected ale and lager yeasts and pure Colorado water. Our second floor boasts the most elegant billiard hall in Colorado Springs. The Phantom Canyon Billiard Hall opened in June 1996 and contains 13 pool tables, an entertaining jukebox, foosball tables, dart boards and big-screen TVs. It’s a popular destination for both the Happy Hour crowd and late night joy seekers. Late night specials and promotions complete the Billiard Hall ambience.
I was in town for the night and decided to come to Phantom Canyon Brewing for a beer and dinner. It was a hopping Friday night, but I was still able to get a table quickly. I decided to get a 4 beer flight so that I could try a variety of their beers.
For food, I ordered clam chowder which was the soup of the day. The clam chowder was good but did not have large pieces of clams. The flavors were still there along with a strong herbal profile with thyme. I also ordered the pretzels. They have moved away from the pretzel nuggets and instead are now back to making traditional soft pretzels. The pretzels were made with whole wheat which was great but were not the traditional Bavarian style brown pretzel color. The pretzels were soft and came with both beer cheese and spicy mustard.
For my main entree, I had the Monte Cristo. This was a delicious sandwich filled with meat. The jalapeno egg wash did not really add that much heat to the flavor, and only one time did I really pick up the flavor of the jalapeno. The preserves were great on the sandwich but are not the traditional strawberry that is often served with a Monte Cristo.
The service was great and the atmosphere was buzzing with people having fun and enjoying some great food and beer.
Excellent food and great selection of beers. Venue was nicer than expected.
