Confirmed by 5 users | Last reported on January 10, 2024Lake Colorado City State Park is a bit of a hidden gem. It's tucked away off of I-20 between Midland and Abilene, TX. We have stayed there a couple of different times. The lake water is low, but there are truly some treasures if you're up for exploring. The bluebonnets cover the ground down by the lake. Wildlife is abundant. We've seen an armadillo, jackrabbits, cottontails, roadrunners, and lots of other birds. The ladies' restroom, at least in the Rolling Hills Camping Area, has no shower curtains, but the sites are pristine. Each time we've been there, we have been surprised to not have to knock spiderwebs down from the picnic area. They have been spotless each time. If you're looking for a quiet place to spend a few days, this is a great place. Be prepared to follow detour signs coming in as they are doing a bridge repair.

We got the entire experience with this SP. When we arrived the west Texas winds were gusting up to 50mph, making it impossible to raise the roof in our little camper. Thankfully they had cabins available and we were able to book one for our first night. The cabin was very clean and comfortable, the only downside was its distance to the bathrooms.
Our second night was spent in the campground proper. The spots are very well spaced and the campground was very quiet. There was plenty to do with the kids, to include hiking and fishing. The fishing pier was awesome. The bathrooms were slightly dated but very clean, however the showers were lukewarm at best.

Open space in rolling hills near a lake. Sites were fairly level, good electric 50 and 30 amp, and water . Dump site at exit
The washroom had been trashed the memorial weekend, so one was unusable, others so so. Overall a good place for the night.
About 15 min off the interstate 20.

Lake Colorado City State Park is conveniently located near I-20 and made an excellent overnight stop. This campground is big rig friendly with spacious sites in a rural setting. AT&T cellular service clocked in at 34.7 Mbps download speed and 1.54 Mbps upload speed. Verizon cellular service clocked in at 37.3 Mbps download speed and 2.05 Mbps upload speed. With slow upload speeds on both carriers, I used a cell booster to obtain improved performance on Verizon with download speed clocking in at 46.4 Mbps and upload speed delivering 7.06 Mbps. This state park campground has earned a place on my camping map.

I will cut to the chase immediately. The highlight of this campground is leaving the next day in time for lunch and going to Scotty’s soul food and barbecue in Midland Texas. They have the best darn barbecue we have encountered over 11,000 miles on this trip! Totally worth going out of your way to eat there.
Check-in was very weird. The office was closed so we drove in. The campsite were almost all empty, but they all had reserved flags on them. Even more curiously, another camper told us that the gate officer had told them that the campsite was fully reserved that night. Online it looked like campsites were open, but you can’t reserve same day online. We camped and called at 8 o’clock the next morning and paid for our site without problem. The next morning many sites were still vacant but they all have that reserved flag on them.
This is a no-frills place to stay. The sides are pretty level, and it was quiet. There are covered picnic tables. There are a lot of sites here, pretty close together in the Mesquite loop but better in the rolling Hills loop. There are so many thorns that we were constantly pulling them out of our dogs paws.

We only had one night at this park but it was clean and easy to set up. We camped along the lake and had a nice west wind to keep the flying insects away. The stars at night were spectacular. Keep in mind that a power plant sits on the other side of the lake but it was not intrusive, except for the lights. Easy access from I-20. We were at the park alone so our experience may reflect the lack of people. It’s a huge camping area.

Large spacious campground. Clean and quiet. Very low occupancy makes it like you are alone or BLM. Lots of sticklers - beware your dog will be full of them. 22$/night plus 4$ per person.
