“A dam good time!”
Buffalo Bill Dam is six miles west of Cody, WY, on U.S. 16-20-14 (Yellowstone Hwy.) The visitor center at the dam is open daily May 1-September 30. Hours in May and September are 8am to 6pm Monday-Friday and 9am to 5pm Saturday-Sunday. Hours in June, July and August are 8am to 7pm Monday-Friday, and 9am to 5pm Saturday-Sunday. Visitors may stroll to the top of the dam, view exhibits and a short movie in the visitor center, or rent a self-guided audio tour. The dam is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has been documented by the Bureau of Reclamation, and included in the National Park Service's Historic American Engineering Survey.
Great place to stop on your way between Cody & Yellowstone! Take the dam tour and get your dam pictures! The views are wonderful! You can even buy the dam book!
I was so glad that I found this place on Roadtrippers. Otherwise, I might not have known to stop. We went during a dry spell, so there was no water rushing over the dam, sadly. But it is an awesome thing to behold. The mountains along the river are gorgeous too. The visitor center is great too, and has great big windows that you can view the dam from a unique perspective. The people in the center are very friendly and there are some great free maps for local areas (I picked up a Utah and a Idaho map there). Also you have to use the restrooms while there... trust me. They are special.
The folks at the visitor center are super friendly and helpful. The views from the top of the dam are pretty awesome too. It's not as big as the Hoover Dam, of course, but it's still really impressive. You must stop here on your drive toward Yellowstone!
