Confirmed by 3 users | Last reported on July 19, 2021We stayed here in early July and the wildflowers were plentiful :-). The weather was fine with temperatures ranging from high 70s to low 50s. We got our big rig in about 1.2 miles down the road for Browns Creek to a site on the left after passing several other sites suitable for big rigs that were occupied. We had wonderful views in every direction. The trail head to Browns Creek was within easy walking distance, and the area all around the creek trail head is nice to just stroll around and enjoy the rushing water. Dispersed spots are available for at least a mile beyond the creek. The road that services this area is generally in fair condition with a few heavily rutted spots to avoid. Tree branches along the road are not an issue but may be an issue getting in and out of sites. Traffic on the road includes day hikers due to the trail head.
Most sites have some slope to deal with but not excessive. We only saw chipmunks, hummingbirds and a few other kinds of birds, but the quiet was amazing and wonderful dark skies at night for stargazing. We will definitely come back to this dispersed camping area. www.ourepicfieldtrip.com

Let me say first that this place is wonderful. Now the downside is if you get here on a weekend or late at night there is difficulty finding a spot away from others. Many of the sites are close to each other and that’s our thing. We kept driving and found the last spot at the end of the road. Perfect!
Great parts are trees, space, picnic table, fire pit, sun for solar, and shade for all else. Bathrooms at trailhead if needed but basic toilet only.
Even in the summer the weather was nice and a welcome perk coming from the heat of Texas. We did stay in Pueblo at the state park prior but it was too HOT and no shade. Crowded as well. Won’t be back to that state park.

Stayed about a mile from the TH on 272. Beautiful spot with wonderful views of the surrounding mountains to include Mt. Shavano and Mt. Antero. First night about midnight had a visit from a bear! He knocked over a few things and scratched a hole in my tent. Luckily I decided to sleep in my vehicle that night! Just turned on the panic button on the vehicle and he ran away. Stayed two more nights and he never came back. I will definitely camp there again. Was in a mixture of aspen and ponderosa pine trees. The bugs were minimal. The temperatures were great. Little bit of sprinkles. Perfect!! T-mobile cell was spotty at best.

Excellent spot. Many campers here but many campsites available. Road 272 goes on forever. We went back on it for about 5 miles before finding a spot. Safe area. Very quiet. Sheriff was even patrolling the area. It was a great first book docking experience and I found it on Campendium. Thank you!

My daughter was visiting with her boyfriend who had never been to Colorado. We wanted to show off our amazing state (we are from Colorado Springs). This was the perfect place to bring him. Very private campsite. The fire pit was perfect. The nearby Brown Creek Trail was amazing! I would definitely recommend this campsite and will come back myself! Make sure you wear old shoes though... it almost seemed like the whole area was sprinkled with volcanic ash. Everything had a black tint to it once we left.

This was my first boondocking stay. I picked the area after reading not only that the area is nice, but the spots are quiet and spread out. And they are! The road is a little wash boarded in places but otherwise easy to get to. We arrived at 11am on a Friday and although lots of spots were taken, we did find a spot right next to the browns creek trailhead.
Oh my the stars at night here were amazing!!!!

We decided to head to the BV/Salida area for a few days in route from SW CO up to Rocky Mountain National Park. While in the area we wanted to have fun at Browns Adventure Park, hike a 14er or two, and take a soak in Mt Princeton Hot Springs. We did all of these things - And we camped at the Browns Creek Dispersed Camping area...it's got a ton of options, all with some sort of shade and plenty of space. On the weekend it crowds up so if coming up on Friday, just expect to have to kinda slide in with someone - but come up on Thursday and you get your pick of sites.
We stayed 3 nights on the trip north and swung back through for only one night on our trip back south. It's pretty easy access - only ten minutes or so to find a spot off the main road. If camping along the road to the Browns Creek trailhead, the restrooms at the trailhead are nice (for tent campers, or those who don't use/have rv facilities).
There are tons of sites all around and plenty of places to turnaround (even larger rigs - the trailhead lot is great for turning around). Not a lot of OHV noise/traffic so that was cool. The area is under Antero's shadow and Mt Princeton Hot Springs are an easy 15 minute drive. BV is like 35 minutes away - Salida about the same. Gas is within 15 minutes and cell service was decent the entire time we were there (I did not try to hotspot and work, but did general email, social media, etc). Would definitely recommend.

I pulled in here around 8 PM on a Tuesday and had intentions to stay for multiple nights. Upon waking up the following morning, I was surrounded by 8 to 10 inches of snow and unfortunately had to leave since I wasn’t prepared for it. For the night that I stayed, it was extremely quiet and there were probably 5 to 6 other campers I passed long away. There are pit toilets by the trail head if needed and an abundance of camping spots. I had decent AT&T service in the location I was at. Definitely would recommend visiting brown dog coffee in Salida. The roads to get extremely muddy whenever there is rain or snow so be prepared to have four-wheel-drive or chains on your tires if you’ll be there during storms or snow.

We arrived Friday evening and were able to snag a spot on the 272a loop - it was absolutely gorgeous! The sky was clear and we saw the Milky Way and lots of shooting stars. We were all able to set up our hammocks and there was no fire ban so that was nice as well. Browns creek trail is closeby and it goes up to a beautiful waterfall. We def enjoyed our time here, sucks to leave.
