We had mechanical problems and were trying to find someplace to spend the night; on Fourth of July weekend. Yep. We were resigned to our first-ever stay at the WalMart when I remembered a buddy saying there was a campground just off Hwy 50 near the tiny town of Cimarron. We pulled off to see. On the Saturday of the 4th of July weekend, more the half the campsites were vacant. The campground is clean, well maintained and next to the Cimarron River. Although it's only a mile to the Black Canyon, but there are no real services here, so there seems to be less of an attraction. The visitor center is closed, due to lack of funding. The camp host was friendly and on the ball. There are no hookups, but there is water in the campground and clean well-maintained toilets (with running water). You can walk or drive to the Morrow Point Dam, and you can fish in the Gunnison at the end of the road (a mile).
It's very close to Montrose. We'll come back for a quiet weekend away from town.

We were told by the National Park Ranger to stay here with our 40' fifth wheel. However, after looking at the website after the fact, 30' was the max. We were able to find a spot though. Only a couple of sites would have worked for our trailer our size. The camp host does not check the tickets posted on the site poles by campers because we had a hard time determining if someone had a spot taken or not. Either the tickets were blank or not removed with current dates. Luckily another camper told us about people who were or were not there. The campground was quiet.

We are not sure how the other reviewers got Verizon coverage, but there is none on this campground. We paid $8 because the water was shut off for the season. There was still water available in the bathrooms. The visitor center was also closed for the season. The campground is nice, there are a couple old trains on display. We got a warm welcome from the camp host, who was still there.

This is a wonderful spot near the driveable Morrow Point Dam road with a cool railroad exhibit and picnic area. It’s at the very bottom of a canyon so there is no cell service. Good dry toilets and potable water. Not much room for large rigs but there is a circle drive.. A well-stocked store is within walking distance. Don’t expect much and you will be pleased!

Spent the weekend here to try out our new camper. Overall experience was good. There is clean restrooms centrally located. There is at least two water spigots to get potable water. There is no electric or water hook us at the sites. I liked that there was bear proof containers for storing coolers, etc. There is also bear proof trash and recycling receptacles. There was also a dump station that we used after the weekend was over.
Negatives would be the traffic noise and lack of showers in the restrooms. The campground is off the road, but there is still some traffic noise especially engine brakes when trucks are coming off the hills to the East and West.
The sites were all fairy small. It would be difficult to get anything larger that 30' overall length in most of the spaces. Most of the spaces are single wide, so a 30' camptrailer will just fit, but there won't be room to park your truck. There was a couple of spaces that were double wide so you could put your trailer and truck side by side. Someone traveling in a van or small motorhome shouldn't have a problem.

Absolutely no Verizon Coverage. But who cares? I'm supposed to be enjoying the location instead of surfing the net. So I did. This might be one of my favorite camp grounds. Hopefully the camp hosts will still be the ones I had when I was here. Fabulous people from Tyler, TX. The pads are pretty close to level throughout the CG. And portable water faucets are located about every 3 sites. There is a little country store/Gas Station within 1/2 mile walking distance of the campground. A post office as well.

If I remember correctly, there is only one spot that has all-day shade over the pull in area, there are plenty of trees around other spots though. Overall, a good spot. We arrived late in the week mid-July, we were the only ones there. the next day a few other people arrived.

We wanted to explore the black canyon area and found this diamond in the ruff. Didn't look like much when we pulled in but it was available and we needed a spot for the night.
No hook ups, water available but not directly at campsites and clean restrooms. Hosts were very nice and told us to check out the damn area. Was amazing -views of the river and trails. We decided to stay an extra night. No cell or internet. Recommend you visit Newberry's gas station. Definitely will stay again.

Great place, small quiet and empty. Near the dam and a great hiking trail. Make sure to stop by Newberry's nextdoor if you forget anything. He has a little of everything. There is no electric or cell service here, but we didn't seem to care. The bathrooms here are really clean too. Definitely, worth the stop.
