“fab fossil hunting!”
Once a largely undeveloped portion of the huge (15,000-acre) Indiana Army Ammunition plant, Charlestown State Park is located in southern Indiana. The park is easily accessible, located 8 miles east of I-65, on State Road 62. With scenic vistas of the Fourteenmile Creek valley and the Ohio River, with elevation changes of over 200 feet, Charlestown has much to offer the visitor with its rugged hills and deep ravines. While hiking the rugged terrain you will see Devonian fossil outcrops and areas of karst sinkhole topography. Bird watchers will enjoy the 72 species of birds, including bluebirds, black vultures and an occasional bald eagle.

The lots are big and feature a picnic table and fire ring. There are paved walkways to the nice playground and to the bath house. The back of each lot is a thick brush which adds to the sense of privacy. The water was not turned on for the season yet but there was a water filling station. Our 30 amp service was strong. Remember that this is a big state park and you have distance between you and some of the camp features. We thought we would take a look at the Ohio River which borders the park. It was probably a 4 mile drive to get there. This is a great place to land and relax and ride bikes but may not be an easy walk to various attractions within the park. We weren't able to see the fossil dig but hope to return to do so. The town of nearby Charleston has many services and restaurants. We will gladly stay here again. $25.
Beautiful state park. Sites are large and thoughtfully spread out. Worth the $. Park has several hikes.
The best state park in Indiana.
A typical nice and tidy state park campground. Sites are reasonably large and some have substantial privacy due to vegetation while other sites are more open. This campground has sites with full hookups ($30 to $44 per night depending on weekday/weekend/holiday.) Our electric-only site was $23 for weekdays, $30 for weekends and $33 for holidays. Indiana State campgrounds have rates that are a bit high when compared to similar offerings in other states (especially when you factor in the weekend/holiday "surge pricing,") but they are still better values than are private campgrounds.
This campground is about half an hour from downtown Louisville, Kentucky which was our primary reason for stopping here and provides a good jumping off point for visiting this city. There are supermarkets within about a 15 minute drive from the campground. There are some short hiking trails in this state park.
We had good Verizon signal and were able to stream HD video.

The sites here are nice and large, typical of most state parks we've stayed in. The park appears very clean, groomed, and maintained. It's nice to find full hookups at a state park, and for a reasonable fee. There's also a $9 park entry fee, but fortunately that was a one-time charge and not a daily charge like most other parks. Sites are paved (asphalt) and fairly level, with picnic table and fire ring, and grass lawns. Each campground loop has a nice buffer of trees around each side, but most sites have few/no trees between them, so there's not much privacy in most of the campground (a few sites are heavily wooded). There a plenty of hiking trails in the state park, including one from the campground, and one that visits the remains of the Rose Island amusement park that was destroyed in a flood 80 years ago. There's no WiFi, but our Verizon and AT&T both worked well. Since we had full hookups we didn't check out the bath houses at all and can't report on them. Stores in town (Charlestown) are only a couple miles away. The park is a little far away for visiting Louisville (40 minutes), but it's doable. We'd return here.

The campground in this pretty state park is well thought out, offering full hook ups, spacious sites, and lots to keep visitors occupied and happy. The sites here are very large and quite spacious. There was plenty of room between us and our neighbors and we thoroughly enjoyed having so much space on either side of our rig. The only downside is there are very few trees between the campsites, so it felt less private than some other campgrounds that we've been to, but overall, we had no complaints.
This campground is about 30 minutes from downtown Louisville, so not right there, but certainly within reach. Other than that, you can find all the necessities you need within a short distance. The campground is located about 25 minutes east of I-65, so it's a reasonably convenient place to stop if you're traveling north or south through Indiana.
While certainly not the cheapest state park we've stayed at (and take note of significant fees for making changes to reservations), given the space and amenities, we thought it was a good value. We would absolutely stay here again.

Nice park. We stayed Easter weekend...they had just opened up full hook up sites, so not very full. Level sites, paved. Price a little high for state park, but reasonable. Lots of hiking trails, good place to ride bikes. Probably pretty busy in the summer. Nice proximity to Louisville. Will stay here again if we pass this way...four stars based on our criteria, “would we stay here again, absolutely! Would we go out of our way to stay here [5stars], not really.

We have really enjoyed our stay at Charlestown State Park. This campground is well laid out with an easy drive in and very private with lots of night stars and the sounds of silence. Most of the sites on the passenger side (outside) seem to be at the perfect angle for an easy back in. A good portion of the driver's side sites are straight to the road, and would require a bit of finesse to back in a larger 5th wheel like ours. We stayed in one of the two loops with full hook ups. Shortly after you enter the park, there is a dual lane fresh water tank fill station for all the other sites with no water hookups. The sites are all paved and offer 30/50 amp service.
The 15 miles of trails here are beckoning us to explore, so as soon as the rain stops we'll slip on the boots. The area itself has everything you need for supplies, groceries and laundry and Louisville is just a short drive away too. We will definitely be back and stay a bit longer.

Very clean park, nice park people! Large park, just so happened only about 7 campers in the whole park! spot was sloped down so no leveling needed...clean restrooms with hot shower. Verizon was good - 2-3 bars - stayed in electric spot but there are full hookups

Great Indiana state park with options of partial and full hook ups! Plenty of sites offer secluded private camping with excellent comfort stations. Just 20 mins to Louisville Kentucky. Much better than the private RV parks.
Best sites with electric in my opinion: 160, 162, 164, 117, 179, 110.
