“rustic, picturesque campground”
Overview At an elevation of 10,800 feet, Sugarloaf is the highest elevation campground that the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest has to offer and it is one of the highest elevation campgrounds in the United States. The sites at this location offer a breathtaking panorama of the Snowy Range which peaks out at 12,000 feet. There is little or no shade in the campground due to elevation, the pine beetle infestation, and the removal of hazard trees. This campground will have a mix of reservation sites and first-come, first-served sites for the 2024 season. If you are not reserving your site, you may be able to pay for your campsite(s) by cash or check once you are at the campground. Recreation Sugarloaf Campground is near a variety of hiking trails and two crystal clear snow-melt lakes: Libby and Lewis Lakes. Non-motorized craft can be used on these lakes but you must carry your boat to the water's edge. Both Libby and Lewis lakes contain brook trout and splake (a hybrid of a male brook trout and female lake trout). Lewis Lake is annually stocked by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD). Use of live-bait fish is prohibited in lakes and streams within the Forest. Three popular trailheads originate in this area that range in difficulty level to accomadate visitor's interests. Savage Run Wilderness and Platte River Wilderness are nearby to the south for visitors that desire a more remote setting. Natural Features The campground sits on a spruce and fir-lined hillside in the midst of a fisherman's paradise of 102 recreational lakes. This is a rustic, picturesque campground where every site has delightful views of the Snowy Range. The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests and Thunder Basin National Grassland encompass nearly 3 million acres from central and northeastern Wyoming to north-central Colorado. Black bear, bobcat, coyote, elk, marmots, moose, mule deer, and pikas are just some of the many animals that inhabit these rich and diverse lands. Nearby Attractions The campground is 1.5 miles from the Libby Flats Observation Area. Visitors can find many more outdoor opportunities in the surrounding Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest including hiking, biking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, hunting, sightseeing, and winter sports.

Arrived just before night fall and the winds were howling. Rained through the night. Woke upto clear and sunny skies, but it was chilly. We had excellent views of the Snowy range and Lake Libby.
Fire ring/grill combos, back in and pull up rv sites.
Vault toilet, did not use it tho.

Beautiful view from this high elevation campground (around 10,000 ft). Sites are well spaced but don't offer a lot of privacy. Get here early as it fills by early afternoon most days. It was very windy when we were here and quite chilly at night. You can hike right out of your campsite to wonderful alpine lakes. My husband caught 18 trout in about an hour on the lake right by camp. 2 moose and a whole herd of cattle walked through the valley near camp one morning. Centennial is about 20 minutes down the mountain and offers a bakery/ice cream/gift shop along with a bar/restaurant, with another soon to open. There is no cell service here but a neighbor had good LTE if he went up a small hill by the sign in station.

Stayed 2 nights in September of 2019 in site number 6. It was a perfect back in site for our 22' travel trailer and truck with incredible privacy. Abundant trails and lakes to walk around. No Verizon cell service and Thursday evening when we pulled in the campground was about half full but filled up Friday. Scenery is second to none but beware the winds picked up and dropped the temperatures to below freezing in a hurry!

We got our 38’ class A easily into site 16. In my opinion, the best spot in the campground, very easy to level out. Never thought I’d have to run the heat in August, but here we did. Great trails abound. Our neighbor saw a moose up near the highway turn off. Water from the well pump is good. No cell service, but, if you go to the high point at Libby Flats you can get a bar or 2 of ATT. It’s a very popular spot so if you want to get in, get there by 8:00 AM and wait for someone to pull out. We were there the 5th through the 9th of August and the wildflowers were insane. The access road was a little bumpy, but if I can do it...

I really liked this campground. Its high elevation makes it exposed, wind-blown, and chilly but that is all part of the experience. There was plenty of room for my 25' trailer, the site were level, and the sights were fabulous. Sites are spread out so there is reasonable privacy but the trees are stunted at this altitude do don't expect much shade. There are many hiking options to alpine lakes or Medicine Bow peak and I could have stayed several days. It is first-come first-served so getting there early is a good idea. Weekends could be tougher. I would definitely like to return. As mentioned in another review Verizon is available at spots along the highway or at the top of Medicine Bow peak.

We arrived before the original opening dates, so we were able to snag one of the 4 first come first serve sites. We stayed in site 13, which we think is one of the best sites. Sites 13-16 are first come, while the remaining sites (1-3, 5-12) are resealable on rec.gov. There is trash, 3 pits, and at some point should be water in the campground. Campground is centrally located to several great hikes as well as two nice lakes ( Lewis and Libby)
We stocked up on groceries in Laramie as well as laundry. Saratoga is a cute little town that does have a small grocery, and they have a fun public hotspring. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to coming back!

This campsite within the Medicine Bow NF / Snowy Range is a perfect location for great views and great hiking. It is a dry camping site, great for solar; the only water is from a manual pump well. Lots of wild life around the campsite, we had a couple of moose in the campground. It is a relative short season, opening in July, in some years, mid July because of the snow.
The experience for me was a bit dampened due to a lots of downed logs from some rather big trees. I know the Forest Service has been lacking funds and they have been starting to revamp old campground around the country and this location could use some TLC and removal of the trees on the ground. Despite this, I will stay there again in the future.
