“A Natural Sanctuary in Cavalier!”

Located on the north shore of Lake Renwick, Icelandic State Park offers visitors not only a wide array of recreational opportunities, but also glimpses of North Dakota's homesteading heritage and its natural beauty. Boating, swimming and fishing for northern pike and other game fish are popular activities. Picnic areas enable visitors to enjoy a relaxing afternoon in the shade of old oak trees, while the campgrounds offer full amenities, including electrical hookups, modern comfort stations with showers and sewage dump station. Three sleeping cabins are also available from mid-May through the end of September.  Within the park are the Pioneer Heritage Center and restored historic buildings. Also found here is the Gunlogson Homestead and Nature Preserve. This early homestead preserves the state's pioneer spirit, while the 200-acre natural wooded area along the Tongue River is a sanctuary for plants, birds and wildlife.

This is probably my favorite ND state park. Lots to do if that’s what you want. Or sit around and do nothing. Short bike ride to the town of Cavalier. If you like a great cup of coffee, make sure to stop at Blue Fox Coffeehouse.

Site was paved and mostly level. Picnic table and fire pit at each site. We were in the west loop. Slightly confusing layout depending on if your site is on the outside of loop enter counterclockwise wise if on the inside of the loop enter clockwise. We enter the wrong way so had to do som maneuvering to have hook ups on the correct side. Sites are nicely spaced. Could accommodate large rigs

Nice state park off the beaten path. We stayed in the north loop. The electric and water were not conveniently placed, but we made it work and still faced inward to a nice big site. The campground was empty when we got there, but filled quickly with locals for Friday thru Sunday and was empty again by Sunday night. The showers were cleaned often. The hiking around the park was great! The trails were maintained and nice. Also did a scenic “back way” over by the Pembina Gorge that we loved.

We enjoyed our stay. Water and Electric only at your site. Dump station in the park. No wifi amd cell signal was weak. Most sites have plenty of shade which can be good and bad. Good to help keep us a bit cooler on the 100 degree days we had, but the amount of leaves/pollen/seeds/sap it left on our truck and trailer was bad. There is a dog park but it has zero shade so go early on those hot days. A number of hiking trails to enjoy. The facilities seemed nice but we didn't use them. There was a fire ban during our stay but we wouldn't have been able to use our pit as it was sunken in the ground on one side. The beach area is nice and there is a nice concession stand. Overall, a good value for your money.

Big campground with three loops. Has a lake with beach area and hiking trails. The dump station/fill water is located right before the campgrounds. Staff is friendly and helpful.

All sites in the north and south loops share water spigots between two sites and some require 50-75' hoses. The electrical boxes are located on the opposite side of most campgrounds. A pattern we've been seeing in ND so far is to enter the campground loop from the left if you have an inside site and enter from the right if you have an outside site. This was the case here as well as Turtle River State Park. We'll see if it holds with the two other parks we are visiting.

Site 109 - located in the north loop and is pretty level. Has partial shade throughout the day with some sun. Neighbors are spaced out nicely.

We did have to pay $2.50 to switch to 109 from 123 which was unlevel and full sun.

Site 107 - good shade in afternoon. Fairly level with a good amount of outdoor space.

Site 116 - fairly level with a very private large outdoor space. Does have one tree that gives good shade in the afternoon/evening but mostly sunny and open.

Water seemed fine and tasted fine. We do filter but water seemed fine before going into our filters. We have Visible/Verizon and our service was good only when park was empty. Weekends were almost unusable until people went to bed around midnight.

We stay in the “primitive “ sites. These sites are spread out in an oval with a double vault toilet and water supply in the center. The site is above the boat launch.
The main bathhouse is fantastic with three showers in the men’s room and an equal amount in the women’s. There’s also 2 family restrooms with showers. No coins needed! Unlimited showers.
The fee is a mete $17 for primitive.
