We stopped at this quiet BLM Recreation site (https://www.blm.gov/visit/valley-of-fires) in route to White Sands National Park. We hiked the Malpais Nature Trail (1-mile loop) and bought a few postcards at the VC. Bring water with you on the trail! It's hot down there, but the scenery's well worth it!
