Part of the 8,000 square mile Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field, Capulin Volcano showcases the volcanic geology of northeastern New Mexico. The views are spectacular day or night, with views of 4 different states from the volcanic rim and one of the darkest night skies in the country. Whether it's a quick stop or a day's trip, enjoy exploring the landscape of this unique volcano!
It's not a heavily crowded National Monument with several hiking trails at both the base and summit of the volcano. A rim trail lets you traverse the entire circumference on top with views all around, plus a short trail down into the main crater. Photographers will appreciate the vistas in all directions, but except for winter months, the access hours will not accommodate either sunrise or sunset shots unless you want to walk all the way from base road to summit (no cars after hours). The crater is hard to capture without a wide-angle lens. The $20 fee is a bit steep for what little is offered.
