“Cafe perched on a mountain!”
Located on the makai (ocean) side of Highway 11, one mile south of the Captain Cook Post Office, between mile markers 108 and 109. We are open everyday for breakfast and lunch, from 7:30am until 3:00pm. Our coffee is known for its flavor and aroma. It is grown on the mountainside directly below our lanai at the 1,400 foot elevation. The slightly higher altitude makes it smooth in taste with plenty of body. We guarantee its top quality. Our coffee's name is the name by which our orchard's location was known by the early Hawaiians. They had an uncanny sense of land division here in the islands. This was usually done in vertical pie shapes, running down from the upper mountain slopes, widening out to the shore. The ancients called it Kahauloa for the morning wind that sweeps down into our long valley. Its optimum soil, slope, and rainfall make it ideal for growing the finest coffee available. When you stop at The Coffee Shack, please take a moment to view the very trees which bear our famous coffee beans. This is truly a connoisseur's and a photographer's paradise. The Arabica coffee grown here in Kona found its way to Big Island from Oahu in 1828. The Arabica variety has thrived here in our fertile, volcanic soils and has become a world standard for taste. Kona's superlative flavor has established our limited, estate coffees as the gourmet's delight. Have a freshly brewed cup of Kona Coffee on our open Lanai overlooking 26 miles of coastline. We bake our own delicious pies, cakes, and other special homemade pastries, and freshly baked bread for our delicious sandwiches. Our scenic lanai offers an incomparable view of Kealakekua Bay, where the famous explorer Captain James Cook first arrived in Hawaii. We are perched high on the mountain slope overlooking the lush mountainside of fully producing 85 year old coffee trees. Enjoy the beautiful open lanai for breakfast, lunch, or just a quick cup of coffee on the way to Volcano or the Hawaiian City of Refuge.
This was one of the best places we went to while in Big Island. The food has soul and you can tell that it is well thought out. The staff seems to be in a good mood, which I think is really good... Read more
The only reason it's getting more than one star was the amazing view. The coffee was horrible. It was incredibly bitter, barely a step up from Starbucks. After I ordered, I went to sit down and... Read more
An absolute MUST while visiting the Big Island. We stopped in before hiking & snorkeling at Captain Cook Monument. The views from the restaurant are incredible, the service was great and everyone... Read more
