“home of the world famous Mo's Clam Chowder”
Spectacular Oregon Coast vistas and the bounty of the sea. You'll find them both at Mo's,a Pacific Northwest landmark for over 70 years. Ask an Oregonian about clam chowder and you'll geta one word answer: Mo's! Since the early days, the atmosphere of Mo’s has remained unchanged. Only the two stories of chowder factory, packing and shipping facilities added to the rear give a hint to the widespread popularity and demand for Mo’s Clam Chowder. The Chowder Factory produces about 500,000 pounds of clam chowder a year, some packaged and shipped to grocery stores and the rest delivered fresh to all the Mo’s Restaurants.
If you'd like some really good chowder, get yourself a time machine and go back to the heyday of Mo's any time from the 70's to the 90's... or try any other restaurant in town. Mo's claim to fame reached as far as the Smithsonian.. way back in the day. They seem to have been resting on their laurels ever since. Try the original restaurant in Newport, OR. for some form of the way things used to be. It's true, the view is pretty nice, right on the beach, but so is Wayfarer's view a little further north, right in front of Haystack Rock. The only difference is Mo's now churns out Ivar's style fast food fare and Wayfarer is one of the many consistently great restaurants in the region continuing to improve. A review of pretty much any regional chowder cook-off or competition will prove Mo's is best skipped. Now, when particularly annoying tourists ask where to go for lunch, locals suggest Mo's to get rid of them.
Thinking Chowder on a blustery day at the coast? Mo's is the answer. A must stop every time we're out that direction. Is it going to blow you away with it's service or atmosphere... no, probably not. But it's a great place to kill some time and enjoy the views of the coast, storm watch, or just relax over a bread-bowl of chowder on the Oregon coast.
