Set back off the highway in a tree lined gulch this campground is a very quiet and pleasant place to spend the weekend or your entire vacation.A short hiking trail is available for nature viewing as this is one of the several Basin and Range Birding Trail stops within the Modoc National Forest.A recent dedication of the Highway 139 Auto Tour and Howard's Gulch Interpretive Sites brings an added benifit to this area. The Auto Tour is just south of the campground on the Howard's Gulch Frontage Road.

I stopped at Howards Gulch for just a one night layover. – and its free. All the sites are in a lovely wooded setting and well spaced. Each site has a picnic table, fire ring and BBQ. There is no dump, but there is potable water, and toilets. My site was not exactly level, but good enough. There are only eleven sites and I think just one back-in. Access is easy – right off OR 139 on a paved road. Virtually no traffic noise. No ATT service.
I’m rating the campground four stars overall, but for one night it was truly pleasant.

We stopped here for one night on our way north to Oregon. We used our Golden Age Pass so only paid $6 for our site. All the sites are back-in; sites 2 and 7 are long enough for big rigs. There is no potable water here. The pit toilets were clean. You need a permit to have a campfire. There was minimal road noise. It is a beautiful spot and the temperature overnight was in the low 20's.

Enjoyed our stay for the night. Near the highway yet quiet. We only utilize our rv so not sure about the cleanliness of restrooms. The grounds were well maintained. No cell service.

Very quite in October. Some road noise. No cell service in woods. A few sites fit big rigs. Site 7 is 50ft plus. Clean toilets, garbage cans, water during the season. Nice road, level sites.

This is the best kept secret! Right off Highway 139 with easy access and minimal noise. Has a nature trail. A couple big spaces for long rigs. I have a 42’ class A and parked in a pull through site 5. Site 7 is back-in but long enough for a big rig. The corners are a little tight but we didn’t hit any trees. $15 per night but 1/2 off with NP pass. No one was there when we got there on a Friday at 3:30pm. Two locals came in later. Enjoyed our stay!
