“An old naval station”
The abandoned naval station at the Salton see. Down a 4-5 mile Jeep track off Highway 86. Not a ton to see but worth a quick detour if you are off roading around the area.
The un-named road off the 86 is a very old paved road full of potholes, use caution as the road had collapsed on the right side about a mile down. After about one and a half miles the road angled left toward the old base. I had read other reviews that we may encounter a few small sand drifts that were no more than a foot or two high. Unfortunately, yes that was true, one here and one there, until the road just completely disappeared under the sand. If you have an off-roading vehicle this might be worth the adventure, but definitely not a good idea in my tiny Hyundai, so we were forced to turn around.
