“The "Stand By Me" bridge”
Spanning across Lake Britton, it is on the McCloud River Railroad. This bridge is most known for being in the 1986 film "Stand By Me" which was set in 1959. There are rumors that one of the actors broke his leg while filming. In 20 years the wood parts are worse for wear, but the scene still looks remarkably similar to when the film was shot. The bridge is just as scary to walk over with the gaps between the ties seeing through to water hundreds of feet below. The railway filed to abandon the line east of McCloud in 2007, and the tracks were removed from the bridge in 2008.
Definitely worth a stop if you're passing nearby. If heading south take a left on to the gravel road signposted as a campsite just before the road bridge. The bridge is 100 metres or so down this road.
There are a couple of concrete blocks to stop people getting on to the bridge but these are easily negotiated if you want to walk on the bridge. Just be sure to walk on the wood above the sturdy steel structure below. When we were visiting we even saw a Bald Eagle catching a fish in the water below.
What a special detour! Brought back lots of memories. If you are a fan of the movie it's worth stopping for!
Hi all,
i'm an italian guy and big fan of Stand by me movie.
Is possible to visit easy the railroad bridge from both direction, or just one side? For visiting both side is a long way by car or foot?
Which side do you suggest for visit the railroad bridge to get a better view, considering the concrete barrier and wire mesh?
Finally, there are timetables set up to visit the railroad bridge site, or can you go there any time of day?
What is the exact coordinate of the site?
thanks a lot!
Bridge is just off the road and for Stand By Me fans it is worth seeing where they filmed the train scene.
Definitely a swell place to visit. Especially for the risk taking types. The pictures you can capture on top are fantastic
