“Commemorating the European explorer”

De Soto National Memorial, 5 miles (8 km) west of Bradenton, Florida, commemorates the 1539 landing of Hernando de Soto and the first extensive organized exploration by Europeans of what is now the southern United States. In May 1539, Conquistador Hernando de Soto’s army of soldiers, hired mercenaries, craftsmen and clergy made landfall in Tampa Bay. They were met with fierce resistance of indigenous people protecting their homelands. De Soto’s quest for glory and gold would be a four year, four thousand mile odyssey of intrigue, warfare, disease, and discovery that would form the history of the United States.

Small park, but great for a leisurely stroll. The rangers are incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and helpful. This covers a part of American history often overlooked. If you're in the area, certainly check it out.

Great historical sight! Not a huge place, but a quick stop is well worth it if you're in the area! They have a great kids "park explorer" program also. Between the historical elements and beautiful views, plenty of photo ops also. Even on a rainy April afternoon we enjoyed our visit!!

Not a lot of excitement, but a great place to visit. Experience some history. Enjoy the nature trails. Take photos wearing Spanish armor. Annual landing re-creation around April.
