“Chiricahua Apaches vs. the U.S. military”
The visitor center is best accessed via the Fort Bowie Trail. The story of Apache Pass and the events that led to the establishment of Fort Bowie are best understood via a 3-mile roundtrip hike from the trailhead on Apache Pass Road to the visitor center and Second Fort Ruins. For those who cannot hike the trail visit our Directions page for more info: http://www.nps.gov/fobo/planyourvisit/directions.htm
This is a 25 minute drive off the I-10. Really easy to find, good signage. You do have to drive on a dirt road for about a mile but it is nice and maintained.
The park ranger, Michael Dozie, did an amazing job at explaining everything to us. The fort is set on a beautiful landscape. If you have some time, stop by and take in this amazing historical site.
The parking for the fort is iffy for RV's. I had a tow vehicle and had to unhook to turn around. The fort is a mile and half hike one way but well worth it. The park has labeled plants, Pony express route, stage coach route, and many other items of interest. Be sure to take water with you on the hike.
