On September 17, 1862, the battle of Antietam took place in Sharpsburg, Maryland. This Civil War battle between the Confederates and Union became known as the bloodiest single-day battle in American history. The combined total number of soldiers dead, wounded, or missing was almost 23,000.
Since most of the battle took place around what was then referred to as Sunken Road, several people died in this eroded lane. More bodies were then moved there until proper burial could take place.
