Located in the Sonoma Coast State Park, Wright's Beach Campground has 27 campsites that are located adjacent to the beach. Sites 1-10 are premium sites with ocean views. It is important to note; however, that the ocean here is far too dangerous for wading or swimming. Sleeper waves, riptides and a strong current make it one of the deadliest beaches in California. Parents who let their children get too close to the ocean (which means playing on wet sand) will receive a stern warning from park rangers who will check in from time to time on the bluffs above the beach.
We manage to snag a premium site once or twice a year. It takes some planning and persistence to get one of these coveted sites because they are booked as soon as they become available, but is worth the effort. The sites are semi-secluded with trees or bushes between sites, but you may be exposed to the elements (strong winds).
There is a trail that begins on the bluffs above the park (Kortum Trail) that is well maintained and offers up stunning coastal views. You can also hike along the beach from the campground for about a mile, and sometimes you won't see another person the entire time. Dogs are allowed on the beach (on leash), but they are not allowed on the Kortum Trail.
If you like falling asleep listening to waves roll onto the beach; this is not the place for you. The ocean thunders onto the shoreline at night in a magnificent display of the power of nature. Awesome.
