The Berkeley Jazz Festival is held once a year at the outdoors Hearst Greek Theatre on the University of California, Berkeley campus. The theatre overlooks the San Francisco Bay at Hearst & Gayley Road. The festival, begun in 1967 by Darlene Chan, is now being produced by "Bay Area Productions", and Gregg W. Perloff's "Another Planet Entertainment", and has no connection to the original UCB-student-run festival. In 2007, Harry Belafonte was recipient of the first ever Berkeley Jazz Festival Icon Award.
