“commemorating the Homestead Act”
The Homestead Act of 1862 transformed the world. Millions were invited to file claims including, families, immigrants, single women, and freed slaves. Over 10 percent of the United States was homesteaded! The land, long inhabited by American Indian cultures, changed forever. Homesteaders created settlements and farms, drove industrial advancement, and built our nation chasing the American Dream.
This place exceeded our expectation. It is a nice big museum type of building with interactive display inside. You can buy 2015 Homestead National Monument of America quarter here. It's part of the United States Mint's America the Beautiful Quarters program. If you don't have enough cash for fancy coin sets but still want one, you may get around it buy purchasing small item from their gift shop and ask for change in quarters. They usually have those special ones at the register to give.
Great visitor centers with museum of artifacts with informative rangers and short hiking trails with opportunity to see local wildlife.
