“Get hands on with Black Gold”
Founded in 1941, the Kern County Museum features Pioneer Village, the award winning hands-on oil exhibition Black Gold: The Oil Experience, and the Lori Brock Children's Discovery Center for youth eight and under. The Main Gallery, housed in the historic Chamber of Commerce building, is home to the Museum’s changing exhibits, reference library, and collections storage. The outdoor complex contains more than 50 buildings, including historic structures that represent different aspects of the County’s history, a gift shop, and several facilities for administration, maintenance of the grounds, exhibits, and artifacts. The Museum supports the concept of lifelong learning, offering a variety of programs targeted to specific ages and interests, along with programs families can enjoy together. A community-wide festival celebrating the culinary delights and health benefits of Kern County nuts – almonds, pistachios, pecans and walnuts – will take place June 7, 2014. There will be “nuttin’ but fun” at the Kern County Nut Festival, which is patterned after large festivals such as the Gilroy Garlic Festival. This food and fun fest will feature events such as cooking demonstrations, signature food dishes, nutty concoctions, music, dancing, crafts, art, agricultural exhibits, games, health information, contests and other “nutty activities.
