“at petrified forest!”
Painted Desert Visitor Center provides information, book sales, exhibits, and restrooms. Timeless Impressions, a free orientation film about the park, is shown every half hour. A restaurant, gift shop, gas station, and convenience store are adjacent to the visitor center.
If you are driving west through the area enter the park from the south off of 180. There is only one road in the park and it actually goes through both the painted desert and the petrified forest parks. It's only $10 per car to get in. Its more of a driving Park then a hiking Park with the sites being less than a 5 min walk from any pullout parking lot. The landscapes are amazingly beautiful and worth the stop.
Always take my breath away. I did my Christmas shopping at the gift shop. Not all monies spent there go to the tribe.
It's legitimately an awesome experience (in the literal sense of the word). The views are breathtaking, and everything is so colorful! (Painted Desert, tho. Amirite?!)
Since we were on the way to see the Grand Canyon, we bought the $80 annual National Parks pass.
They allow you to bring your pets along for the trip through the park - just be sure to clean up after them!
Also, the Blue Mesa is a MUST see! You won't regret it!
100% worth the entire drive, make sure you go see the Blue Mesa too! The views are breathtaking!
Check out the short film that talks about the history of the park. And the cafe has really good Frito pie! I was very surprised at how good it was.
Fun side trip for us. Short 22 mile drive that was very pretty and quite interesting!
It's just off I-40, so it's super easy to stop by and check out on your way through! The hours change depending on the season, so be sure to check before you go.
