“a resting & gathering place for over 100 years”
Hermit's Rest, perched at the edge of the Grand Canyon 8 miles west of the village, is much more than a gift store and snack bar. Located at the end of Hermits Road, this building has been a resting and gathering place for more than 100 years. Enjoy awesome views of the Grand Canyon, meet the resident ravens, relax by the enormous fireplace with a cup of hot chocolate and browse the unique merchandise in the gift shop area of this historic building. Complete peace and quiet is a rare thing to find in the modern world or on the tourist-packed Rim Trail, so, discovering a truly quiet and eerily calm spot a short walk from Hermit's Rest made it one of my favorite points in the Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim). Hermit's Rest is the name of the outpost erected in 1914 at the western end of the South Rim Trail. It has served as a rest area for tourists for almost 100 years. The structure made from rocks and wood is a National Historic Landmark. It is still used today as a tourist gift shop and small snack shop (prepackaged small foods/drinks). The most prominent features are a large semi-circular fireplace and a porch right on the rim of the canyon. The free Red Line Shuttle makes it's farthest stop from Grand Canyon Village here. From the shuttle stop (or the Rim Trail), walk past a stone arch with a Spanish mission bell to find Hermit's Rest. Continue walking a short distance to the entrance of Hermit's Trail which can take you down to the Colorado River below. It was along the rim and this trail, that I was able to truly escape the path and find peace ... just myself with the amazing view of the Grand Canyon and the occasional gust of wind or noise of a bird in the distance.
