To reach the camping area, pass the Timber Mesa Trailhead parking lot. This lot does not allow camping, but it is a good place to drop a rig for a bit to scout the area. There is ample parking at the trailhead, but it does fill on weekends with toy haulers and horse trailers so plan accordingly.
The road is not maintained often, but does not require any high clearance or 4X4.
Past the trailhead, on the left are some low scrub pines. There are multiple small campsites within these pines that would be perfect for a Van or teardrop trailer. The pines end in a large field and a dirt track borders this. This track is drivable but when wet I would not attempt it. This allows the sites to be pull throughs. The sites are not level enough for a large rig.
Continuing down the road you will reach the Jacques cabin site. This area has a large grassy pad that would fit a large rig. It is full sun, but the ground is soft in the spring. It has nice views of the grasslands bordering the mesa. This is a perfect spot for a solar rig.
This road is part of the Maverick OAV area so there will be off-road vehicles.
We had 2 bars of AT&T and 4 bars of Verzion 4G in the area.

Easy access the site with a 40 foot rig. There are only a 2 sites we could fit. With light rain, the soil carry the heavy weight. The street noise was low and ok with us. A view ATV and cars during the day time, otherwise low noise. The best part we loved the 7.5 mile hike. Along the Porter Mountain Road other sites, easy access for larger rigs if it's dry. Scout each site first. T-Mobil using 3G Cellular-One service. Phone is good, Internet slow.

I stayed here one night in a 20' 2WD campervan. The road up to the trailhead was not bad. A few easily avoidable washout areas but overall it looked like it gets maintenance every once in a while. There were only a few dispersed camping spots and they weren't very well defined. The area was very quiet and the view was nice. We woke up to grazing cattle and calves outside our door. The immediate access to a trailhead was an added bonus. I docked one star due to the lack of spaces and the fact that the area was VERY dusty and with the afternoon winds it wasn't feasible to sit outside. I guess I'd prefer dust to mud, but either are still less than ideal. I likely wouldn't stay here again but it's okay for an overnight stay or if you are wanting to stay close to town for free.

I drove in on a Sunday and thankfully found a spot. Not meant for big rigs! There’s probably 4 designated spots but the last one seems like they potentially live there full time. The spot is close to the road but no one bothered us. There are definitely hunters that come frequently. Bones everywhere! Even hooves when the fur still on. Also buckets of other trash I filled up three medium bags from water bottles to food wrappers. The land definitely isn’t taken care of. You’ll also hear a lot of gun shots. Super close to the trail which is nice. Wouldn’t come again if I found another spot with just as fast signal. If you have Starlink I wouldn’t bother with this spot. The grazing cattle is pretty cool to wake up to.
