“classic vintage clothing from 1890's to 1960's”
Amelia’s in located in a wonderful , little clapboard house originally built in 1934, and moved to 2213 So. 1st St in 1936 by a Texas Ranger and his young bride. They rented out the front room, which has a separate entrance, and what was once a hallway to the bathroom was later turned into a linen closet. Oh, what you learn when you look closely…… The shopping and stock is arranged by category, not size or decade. Categories include Cocktail, Evening and Day Wear, Suits, Skirts, Aprons, Ties, Sport Coats, Hawaiian Shirts, Slacks, and Sweaters….and More! Hats, purses, gloves, scarves and shoes are everywhere; inserted in displays, cases and hanging from the antique door knobs that line the upper reaches of the walls. The front room is devoted to wedding gowns and dress’ of a pale persuasion, including Victorian and Edwardian lingerie and Tea Dress’. There are two cases that feature Jewelry; the one in the “Wedding Room” is filled with pearls, aurora borealis crystals, ivory, bakelite and every other sort of pale or creamy colored jewel and accessory that a bride might enjoy adding to her ensemble. Lamps, mostly from the 30′s thru the 50′s, are carefully selected, restored, and are scattered throughout the shop. Painting and prints, small decorative items and whatever treasures find their way to Amelia’s are displayed along with kitchenware, bar ware, linens, china, glass and trophys! Good examples of ethnic clothing or accessories, particularly items showing handwork or non-machined embellishment, fit nicely into our aesthetic. Our interests include any older object of high kitch or design that make us gasp or smile, swoon or chuckle. A Masters Degree in Design has it’s uses, after all!
