“also known as The Viles Arboretum!”
The Viles Arboretum (known as the Pine Tree State Arboretum until 2009) has 224 acres of woodlands and former farmland that has been planted to more than 300 varieties of trees and shrubs. The Arboretum was renamed to honor the Viles Family of Augusta, and also to reduce confusion from visitors who believe that the arboretum is run by the state government (it is not). The plantings are grouped into 20 plant collections of different themes, including Native Plants, Heirloom Apples, Community Forests, and an extensive hosta collection with over 140 varieties. There are 6 miles of trails, varying from short and relatively gentle terrain to rough woodland. The hours of the Arboretum are sunup to sunset, seven days a week!
