From the upper trailhead on Forest Road 2060 at Horn Gap, the first 1.3 miles of the Horn Gap Trail down to Forest Road 2060200 is a winding, wide awake single track that opens mid way to a grand view of Mount Ashland. While certainly not extreme, this segment of the trail does offer some technical fun that casual riders may find difficult to negotiate. Tight clearances, steep side slopes, short radius turns and a couple of slalom courses through the pine saplings will keep riders on their toes. At the bottom turn left onto Road 2060200 and 1.8 miles on a narrow, pleasant overgrown dirt road to the lower trailhead on Forest Road 2060 once again. The Horn Gap trail was constructed as a mountain bike 'tie trail' to provide a side loop off the very popular Ashland Loop road (Forest Road 2060 - refer to the Lithia Loop MB route guide). The Horn Gap trail can be ridden or hiked in either direction from the upper or lower trailhead (3.1 miles one way). It can also be used in conjunction with Road 2060 to create a nine mile loop from either trailhead, or an 18 mile 'stemmed' loop originating in town at Lithia Park. Special considerations: The Horn Gap trail is located entirely within the Ashland Watershed, which is the source of the cities water supply. Special consideration must be given to its' protection. When fire danger is high, the entire watershed may be closed to all entry during the summer and fall. No camping or campfires are allowed. Riders must stay on the roads and designated trails. Use of the trail is not recommended in rainy weather when soils are wet. Road 2060 and 2060200 are closed to motor vehicle use; however administrative traffic (fire and watershed patrol) occurs routinely road so be alert for oncoming vehicles. If you're riding as a loop keep in mind that road 2060 is narrow, winding and rutted in places. Bikers should control their speed of descent, and be especially watchful for oncoming cars or trucks. Carry sufficient water and a snack or lunch.
