“marks the site of the first shot fired”
Fort Anahuac marks the site of the first shot fired in the early days of the Texas Revolution. Today, this 40-acre park contains RV hookups, camping areas, picnic tables, covered pavilions and boat ramps for access to Trinity Bay. Visitors will also enjoy a lighted pier, various swimming areas and three baseball fields. One of the most popular activities at the park is bird-watching among the marshes and along the shoreline of the bay.
This is a county park with bathrooms and a few tables, but little else. It is free but uou need to get a permit from the county office just past airport rd about a mile away. Nice view and friendly locals. Three days stay no hook ups.
We had our reservations cancelled at a state park so needed a place to meet up with some friends for a few days. We stayed here for one night and it was very nice. We could not get a permit because it was Saturday and nobody was there so we called the Sheriffs office and they said it was no problem to stay for the night. We parked in a dry camping spot because the grassy areas were very wet and soft. Had a beautiful sunset and enjoyed walking around the park. Very clean park and nobody was around except for a couple people fishing
This is really a great spot for dry camping , but only if you're not afraid of some high gust winds. It's windy season around west tx between the months of Feb thru May. Be prepared to endure some high winds if you go around that time. Other than that they have bathrooms and a place to throw your trash..no showers. Enough area for at least 3 travel trailers or smaller rv's that's right on the water.😁 Enjoy!
Water and electric available but not for hookups. There is actually a shower in the bathroom but it is no maintained so it is dirty and rusty. I don't know if the water is warm or not. The park is clean and well maintained, except the shower. The sign says to park on gravel and not the grass, but there is nothing but grass except the roads and 3 small parking spots. I didn't see that until the next morning and I had parked on the grass. No one said anything to me. It was a Thursday night and very quiet. One other RV in the park. I would definitely stay again. It is a good place to work from when I need a grocery, errand, and laundry day.
If you drive toward the boat launch, you will see some areas with gravel that you can park on.
Arrived on Sunday, all offices closed (as expected). Called Sheriff dept, but they could not give permission for overnight parking. Stayed overnight without issue. It takes some work to find the Commissioner's Office nearby (not referenced on the Commissioner's website). The local office is at:
Chambers County Precinct 2
Commissioner’s Office
102 Chambers County Airport, Anahuac, TX 77514
+14092672409
Beautiful park, fabulous birding. There are electric boxes all over, but they're not turned on. Was tricky getting permit bc the office is in a totally different location on Airport rd. Spent a lovely day working at the library. Don't miss the Coffee Outreach Center next to the Baptist church. Better than Starbucks.
Stayed here April 3-5, 2021. The sign into the park said to park on gravel areas and no camping past the pier. The sites are hard to see because the gravel has been covered up with grass. They are there, you just have to look for them. This is a busy park but no one bothered us. We found a great laundromat (The Washateria) on Miller St. The outside looked pretty rough, but the machines, tables, and floors were very clean and the prices were great!
We really enjoyed all the birds and alligators at the Anahuac wildlife refuge.
It’s 530 on a Monday second to the last week of August. The park is wide open, green grass and a nice view of the water. It’s a lot cleaner than I would expect. It’s a perfect place to stop after a day on the road.
Great place, right on the water. 2 other RVers here. Easy off of I 10 about 7 mile.
The sites are hard to see, so we pulled into the most obvious spot, which according to Google maps used to be a road, but it makes a great pull thru site now.
If you drive past the playground and take the road near what looks like someone's house, you can park down by the water. Two RVs were down there, and a tent camper was set up closer to us.
There are two nice playground sets in the middle of the park. They appeared to be doing some construction to the baseball fields, but nothing while we were there.
We looked around for signage about camping or permits as others have mentioned that's required and saw nothing. No one bothered us. We stayed on a Saturday night.
