“on the gulf”
The beaches of Northwest Florida are among the finest in the world, with clean white sands bathed by gentle waves and clear blue waters that have long beckoned travelers. All of Alys Beach’s 158 acres are within a short and pleasant walk of the beach, where there’s plenty of room for lounging in the sun or swimming, fishing, and other active pursuits. At Alys Beach we enjoy a unique feature in Florida – a beachfront bluff rising nearly 30 feet above the Gulf, giving an expansive view of beach and sea before plunging down onto soft white sands. These sands were once part of the Appalachian Mountains, which weathered over time, turning rock to nearly pure quartz sand that washed down rivers to the sea. As a dynamic spot where land meets sea, the beach is a great place to watch nature mark the changing seasons. In winter, thousands of ducks bob just offshore in the Gulf, while spring brings the annual arrival of migrating birds that come ashore on their way north. By summer, waters have warmed enough to coax mother sea turtles ashore to lay eggs at the foot of the dunes, continuing their ancient tradition. In fall, the sea oats grow tall with golden seed heads that sway in the breeze, and monarch butterflies flutter by on the way to their winter home in the mountains of Central Mexico.
