“an oasis for wildlife”
Fed by snowmelt from the Warner Mountains, the Pit River creates an oasis for wildlife in the high desert of northeastern California -- Modoc National Wildlife Refuge. The 7,000 + acre refuge was established in 1961 to manage and protect migratory waterfowl. Funds available from the Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Act helped purchase this refuge, which is located just south of Alturas, California.
If your destination is Alturas in California, or nearby places, then you should definitely visit the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge which is a proper wet oasis for wildlife.
A result of the Pit River, is a great contrast to the desert landscapes of the area in general. Therefore, it is a place where thousands of birds nest, breed or stop while migrating.
The colors and the sounds are just spectacular and you are highly advised to bring your camera with plenty of free disc space! We visited the area in February when the Winter Wings Festival takes place and spotlights the main nesting area for the largest number of bald eagles in the US during the winter. Great opportunity for amazing photos and people who are responsible for the maintenance of the place deserve great respect and gratitude for they try their best for us to be able to visit such a wonderful natural refuge!!!
