Every city has their trendy part of town, but few neighborhoods are as legitamtely awesome as the San Antonio River Walk. It's got everything: history, art, museums, amazing dining and nightlife, and, most importantly, it's a beautiful place to explore! Built over a long period of time, starting in the 1920's when the San Antonio River flooded, causing several deaths and lots of damage to the city, it's been developed into a thriving attraction that most would say is the crown jewel of San Antonio. For a relaxing introduction to the Riverwalk, hop on a boat tour of the water. Rio San Antonio Cruises offers 35-minute guided tours of the river for only $10. It's a great way to get background on the history of the unique space, to get a feel for navigating the Riverwalk, and to pick out a few things to see and do.
Grab a drink at The Esquire Tavern, San Antonio's oldest bar, circa 1933, which perfectly blends its history with modern flair and fare. Sit at the longest wooden bar top in the whole state (seriously, everything is bigger in Texas) and order one of their craft cocktails, or keep it classic and have the bartender pour you a pint of beer and just enjoy the old-school, authentic atmosphere.
Casa Rio, with its bright Mexican decor and awesome river views, is iconic. Grab some chips and queso and a margarita and ask to sit on the patio and take in the people watching and breezes off the water.
Little Rhein Steak House is located in an old 19th century building. It's got an essential steakhouse menu, with classics like shrimp cocktail, escargots, ribeyes, filets, and more, and the historic Dashiell House, where the restaurant is located, features gardens, plazas, and dining rooms with original woodwork, is an incredible setting.
The Museum Reach adds another mile to the River Walk and provides access to the San Antonio Museum of Art. This cultural institution, located in the old Lone Star Brewery, features more than 30,000 works of art, with galleries dedicated to Asian, Ancient Mediterranean, Latin American and contemporary art. The Latin American collection, with its ties to Texas, is especially cool, and they even feature a collection of Polynesian art. You could easily spend a few hours browsing everything the museum has to offer!
The Pearl Brewery is a massive, multi-use community space, a former brewery and the surrounding neighborhood. Just off the Riverwalk, it features some of the best restaurants, bookstores, and boutiques, in San Antonio, plus an awesome farmers market. Spend an afternoon exploring the gems tucked away here!
