Pig Trail Scenic Byway

2

Drive through the Arkansas River Valley where rich soil lends itself to generations-old vineyards producing award-winning wines. Continue on to Ozark to start your journey on the world-renowned AR 23. Considered one of the top riding destinations in America, AR 23 runs from the Arkansas-Missouri border to US 71, south of Booneville.

While the southern portion is a very nice ride, it’s the highway north of I-40 that is simply exhilarating. This is the location of one of the most renowned routes in the country – the Pig Trail. While the entire length of AR 23 is often referred to as the Pig Trail, it’s actually the 24-mile stretch from I-40 to Brashears – at the junction of AR 16 – that comprises the famous ride, which continues to rank among the best rides in the nation.

There are two competing explanations for how the Pig Trail got its name. The first is that since this portion of AR 23 was part of a popular back-road route into Fayetteville for University of Arkansas Razorback football games, it was therefore dubbed the Pig Trail. The other explanation is simply that the road is as twisty as the tail of a wild hog.

Regardless, the Pig Trail has become synonymous with coiling pavement and breathtaking scenery, often running through deep tunnels of overhanging trees.

Each of the individual exhibits in the Holy Land Tour have been researched for historical accuracy and have been recreated as authentically as possible. Some stops on the Holy Land Tour include: -Speaking with a “Levitical Priest” in the full-scale replica of Moses' Tabernacle in the Wilderness. -Visiting a replica of a first century Inn typical of the type where Mary and Joseph may have asked for shelter. -A first century stable typical of where Jesus was born. -Walking beside the "Sea of Galilee" with Simon Peter as he speaks of his last days with Jesus. -Visiting the upper room where Jesus and his disciples feasted for the Last Supper.

“a breathtaking woodland sanctuary”

Nestled in a woodland setting, Thorncrown Chapel rises forty-eight feet into the Ozark sky. This magnificent wooden structure contains 425 windows and over 6,000 square feet of glass. It sits atop over 100 tons of native stone and colored flagstone, making it blend perfectly with its setting. The chapel's simple design and majestic beauty combine to make it what critics have called "one of the finest religious spaces of modern times. On July 10, 1980 Thorncrown Chapel opened. Since then over six million people have visited this little chapel on the hillside. Thorncrown has won numerous architectural awards. It has been featured on television programs and almost every major magazine in the country has carried a story about the chapel including Time, Newsweek, and Parade.

Thorncrown Chapel is open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is located on Highway 62 West three miles outside of Eureka Springs. There is no admission fee, but donations are accepted. Every tour group will receive a presentation telling the story of the chapel followed by an inspirational song by one of the Thorncrown musicians. It will be a visit you will not soon forget.

The bridge is located just out of Eureka Springs north on 23 and connects Arkansas Highway 187 over the White River at Table Rock Lake. Built in 1949 by the Pioneer Construction Company, the structure is the only suspension bridge open to traffic in Arkansas. The bridge has a 10-ton weight limit and was temporarily closed for inspection in October 2018 after two overweight buses crossed it.
